FOR OPENERS
Missouri opens the Mike Anderson Era this evening with its exhibition-opener against the University of Missouri-Rolla Miners at Mizzou Arena ... While this game won't count in the records books, Missouri head coaches are 14-1 all-time in their first game at Mizzou ... Missouri is 5-0 all-time vs. the Miners, but this will be the first meeting between the two programs since Jan. 2, 1922, a 33-18 win by the Tigers in Columbia ... Not including exhibitions, Missouri is 143-56 all-time vs. in-state opposition, including a 60-42 win over UMKC last season ... Tonight's game will be the first of 13 men's basketball contests played at Mizzou Arena in the month of November … The Tigers will compete in 10 of those contests (two exhibition / eight regular-season) and the remaining three games will be played as part of the John Thompson Foundation Classic on Nov. 10-12 … The Tigers have had quite a bit of roster turnover this season and welcome seven newcomers into the program, although just six (DeMarre Carroll sitting out after transferring from Vanderbilt) will be eligible … The seven newcomers are the most at Mizzou since the 1990-91 season … Missouri returns a pair of starters from the 2005-06 campaign … Junior forward Marshall Brown is back and is the team's top returning scorer (9.6) and rebounder (4.8) … Fellow junior Jason Horton is also back and is one of just six Tigers all time to record 100 assists in back-to-back campaigns.

GETTING TO KNOW TODAY'S FOE
While tonight's game is the exhibition-opener for Mizzou, Missouri-Rolla will be enjoying its second game of the preseason … Rolla opens its 2006-07 season on Nov. 1 at Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark. … Last season, Rolla was 2-25 in its first year as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, with wins coming over Lincoln in the season-opener and Central Bible … The Miners finished the 2005-06 campaign with 22 consecutive losses … Leading scorer Tyrone Davidson returns for the Miners after averaging 12.1 points and 6.3 boards in 24 games last season … Davidson led the Miners in scoring in 12 games, including a season high 27 points in that win over Central Bible … Also back is Shea Wiemann after averaging 10.1 points as a junior … Head Coach Dale Martin enters his 21st season at the helm of the Rolla program.

THE SERIES WITH MISSOURI-ROLLA
Today's contest is the sixth all-time meeting between Mizzou and Missouri-Rolla … This will be the first meeting between the two in-state programs since Jan. 2, 1922 (33-18, Mizzou) … Each of the five previous meetings came in Columbia … The first meeting between Missouri and UMR came 99 years ago on Dec. 13, 1907, with Mizzou winning 39-18.

EXPERIMENTAL RULES IN EFFECT FOR EXHIBITION GAMES
The NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee is experimenting with eliminating the first lane space nearest the hoop on both sides of the lane ... The second, third and fourth marked lane spots will remain.

FAMILY AFFAIR
Mizzou Basketball is a family affair … Head Coach Mike Anderson has three relatives on this season's squad … His son, Michael Anderson, Jr., is a sophomore for Missouri after transferring from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, while his nephew, DeMarre Carroll, is redshirting for the Tigers after two stellar seasons at Vanderbilt … Another of Anderson's nephews, T.J. Cleveland, is an assistant coach for the Tigers and spent his playing days under Anderson and Nolan Richardson at the University of Arkansas.

Another family connection not to be forgotten is that Associate Head Coach Melvin Watkins is the father of senior forward Marcus Watkins.

TWO-SPORT STANDOUTS
From his first day at Mizzou, Head Coach Mike Anderson said “40 Minutes Part II” would allow his players to utilize their natural, athletic abilities and Anderson has recruited players who's abilities transcend those simply needed for the hardwood … Three of Anderson's newcomers have multi-sport experience, with those sports ranging from track and field - to football - to baseball.

  • Freshman guard J.T. Tiller originally signed with Anderson at UAB after earning all-state honors as a guard at Wheeler High School in Marietta, Ga. … Despite all of Tiller's accolades on the hardwood, however, his premier sport could be the triple jump, as the 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard finished second in the Georgia State Championships as a senior and boasted a nationally-ranked leap of 47-02.25”.
  • JUCO forward Darryl Butterfield began his prep career as a high school quarterback at Miami's Carol City Senior High School and teamed with former Miami Hurricane standout and current New York Giant wide out Sinorice Moss … Butterfield played two seasons on the gridiron before injuries sidetracked his football career.
  • Fellow junior college transfer Stefhon Hannah enjoyed a solid pitching career at Hyde Park High School in Chicago's Public League … If you ask Hannah, his best pitch was his fastball … Judging by the speed of a few of his no-look passes, we won't disagree.

RECORDS ARE MADE TO BE BROKEN
As we begin the Mike Anderson Era at Mizzou, let's go ahead and start tracking the slow death of Mizzou's single-season steals records … Below is a list of Missouri's Team and Individual single-season steals marks over the previous 100 years of intercollegiate basketball.

Dandridge, K. Lawrence Sidelined

October and November is supposed to be the cold & flu season, not the broken foot season, but for the Missouri Tigers, broken bones seem to be going around the club like the winter-time virus ... Junior forward Glen Dandridge will be sidelined during the early part of November after suffering a broken bone in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot on Oct. 15 ... Two weeks later, freshman Keon Lawrence suffered a stress fracture in the fourth metatarsal of his left foot forcing him to miss four-to-six weeks ... Lawrence suffered his injury on Oct. 30.

PLENTY OF NEW FACES
Roster additions like this are typically reserved for free agency in the professional game, but this season Missouri welcomes five transfers and two high school standouts to Columbia, with two of those transfers coming from the Division I ranks and three more from junior college ... Although Vanderbilt transfer DeMarre Carroll will sit out the 2006-07 campaign, Mike Anderson, Jr., (UAB transfer) will be available along with former JUCO standouts Darryl Butterfield (Mineral Area CC), Stefhon Hannah (Chipola CC) and Vaidotas Voluks (Redlands CC) ... Also entering the program are two of the nation's more highly-touted high school standouts, Keon Lawrence (Newark, N.J.) and J.T. Tiller (Marietta, Ga.) ... The seven newcomers represent one of the larger influxes of new faces in school history and is the most since 1990-91 when Norm Stewart's Tigers opened the doors to seven new players that included Jevon Crudup and Melvin Booker.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME
The seven new Tigers on this season's roster will have plenty of opportunities to get acclimated to their new home in November, as Mizzou plays a record 10 home games throughout the first month of the season ... Including exhibition games vs. Missouri-Rolla and the Lithuania Academy, Mizzou will host nearly half of its school record 21 homes during November.

Conversely, Mizzou has just four total games in the month of December ... Due to finals week and the holiday break, the Tigers go 27 days in between home dates with Evansville on Dec. 3 and Southern on Dec. 30.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
As Mizzou enters its second century of intercollegiate basketball, the Tigers also welcome their 16th head coach into the program, Mike Anderson ... Overall, first year head coaches at Mizzou are 185-115, which is a winning percentage of .617 ... The school record for winning percentage in a coach's first season is shared by Walter Meanwell (1917-18) and Craig Ruby (1920-21) who each went 17-1 (.944) during their first campaign ... The record for wins by a first-year head coach is 18 (18-13 overall) by Quin Snyder in 1999-2000 ... Ironically, the Tiger coach with the lowest winning percentage in his first season is legendary sideline boss Norm Stewart, who went 10-16 during his initial year in Columbia, rebuilding a Tiger program that went just 3-22 the year prior.

TIGERS PICKED EIGHTH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON COACHES POLL
For the second consecutive season the Missouri Tigers were picked to finish eighth by the Big 12 Conference Coaches in the annual preseason poll … Missouri received 44 total votes, two more votes than ninth-place Oklahoma … Kansas, who returns all-five starters was the unanimous choice to win the league, while Texas A&M and Oklahoma State round out the top three.

FEW COVERED LIKE MIZZOU
With 29 of the currently scheduled 32 games televised and the Big 12 Conference's largest radio network calling the action, few collegiate basketball programs are covered like the Missouri Tigers … Mizzou will have 16 games carried on the Mizzou Sports Network, which includes Fox Sports Midwest in St. Louis and the Midwest Region and Metro Sports out of Kansas City … The Tigers also have seven games televised on ESPN-Plus, four on the ESPN Family of Networks (ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN 360) and one game on ABC.

ANDERSON MEANS CHAMPIONSHIP BASKETBALL
The Tiger Slam is a term typically used in PGA Tour Golf when referring to Tiger Woods' run of four consecutive majors throughout the 2000 and 2001 seasons, but Missouri's newest Tiger, Head Coach Mike Anderson, has achieved a Grand Slam of success of his own … As a player, Anderson helped guide Nolan Richardson and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to the 1981 NIT Title thanks to an 86-84 win over Danny Schayes and Syracuse … Anderson then continued his success in the coaching profession, helping Arkansas achieve (12) 20-win seasons, four 30-win campaigns, three Final Fours and the 1994 National Championship … As a head coach, Anderson earned a conference title with UAB in 2004 and led the Blazers to the Sweet 16.

BLACK AND GOLD GAME RECAP
Stefhon Hannah made his Mizzou debut in dramatic fashion, burying a 19-foot jumper with time expiring to hand the Mizzou Black squad an 87-85 win in front of 2,927 fans at Mizzou Arena … Hannah's team led by as many as 21 points in the first half, before a three-point barrage from Matt Lawrence (6-of-10 treys) and an 8-of-11 shooting night from Keon Lawrence (18 points) brought the Gold storming back … Marshall Brown (Mizzou Black) led scorers with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting, while Lawrence's 22 tallies paced the Gold … Newcomer DeMarre Carroll corralled a game-high 14 boards (seven offensive), while Jason Horton led the game with eight assists.
