The University of Missouri women's tennis team won five matches in the second day of action at the Kansas State Invitational Saturday in Manhattan, Kan.
After the matches, Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey commented on day two of the tournament.
"We're playing really tough competition. We're just trying to get better every day."
The Tigers faced off against players from Kansas State and Arkansas in the hidden-dual format tournament. Both teams are coming off solid 2006 seasons, as the Wildcats were ranked 54th in the final poll and Arkansas was ranked 47th. The Tigers will host both teams in Columbia in the spring.
Highlighting the doubles action for the Tigers, the Mizzou duo of Kaitlin Dunham and Chrissy Svetlic earned two victories on the day. The duo defeated Kansas State's Tamar Kvaratskhelia and Natasha Vieira, 8-3, in the first match. In their second match, they defeated Melissa Hoffmeister and Carly Dixon of Arkansas, 8-2.
Tiger seniors Amanda Pratzel and Erika Josbena lost both of their doubles matches against teams from Kansas State and Arkansas. Raquel Wagner and Katelyn McKenzie also lost their matches against K-State and Arkansas duos.
In singles play, Svetlic defeated K-State's Tereza Prochazkova in two sets, 6-3, 6-3. McKenzie lost the first set in her match against KSU's Natasha Vieira, but came back to win, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Wagner won her match when Kansas State's Olga Klimova retired in the first set.
Tigers Josbena, Pratzel and Dunham lost their singles matches against Wildcat players.
The Kansas State Invitational will conclude Sunday as the Tigers face players from Arkansas in singles action. Arkansas features the event's only ranked singles player, No. 83 Ela Kaluder, who was 26-14 last season.
