COLUMBIA, Mo.--The Missouri Tiger throwing contingent impressed for the second day in a row at the 7th Annual Missouri Relays in Columbia. Five Mizzou athletes achieved marks worthy of entry into late-May's NCAA Regional Championships in the men's shot put, a feat no other team in the nation could match in 2005 when Mizzou qualified four. Over 1,700 athletes competed in the high school and collegiate meet under the beautiful mid-Missouri skies over the two days.
Nate Englin and Chris Rohr had already qualified for the regionals a week ago at Arizona State. This weekend, Mizzou added Bill Hobson, Adam Burla, and Tyler Dailey going to regionals in the men's shot put. The quintet swept spots two through six and all threw over 55 feet. Rohr placed second with a two-foot personal-best addition at 58 feet, 6 inches (17.83m). Hobson was third with a 58-¼ (17.68m) toss. Englin was fourth at 57-4¾ (17.49m). Dailey was fifth at 55-9¾ (17.01m). Burla was sixth at 55-9 (16.99m).
Not to be outdone was the Tigers' performance in the men's discus. Junior Bobby Musil won the event with a 179-4 (54.67m) toss, adding two feet to his personal best. Sophomore Dave Borchardt earned his career's first NCAA-regional qualifying mark with a third-place toss of 174-2 (53.10m), adding nine feet to his personal best. Jason Morris capped a good weekend with a fourth place finish with a throw of 172-10. Morris broke Mizzou's school record in the hammer throw on Friday. Those three Tigers are now qualified for the regional in the discus.
Junior Greg Bracey ran a new personal best and a NCAA-regional qualifying time of 10.49 in the 100-meter dash, winning by two tenths of a second in a competitive field.
Senior Chris Horn won the men's long jump, qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships for the first time this season, with a winning leap of 24-¼ (7.32m).
Senior Amanda Bales won the women's 800 meter with a clocking of 2:11.27. Junior Kristin Hansen was the winner of the women's 1500, with a 4:28.76 time.
In the women's discus, Jamie Wynn placed second for the Tigers with a five-foot personal best of 154-10 (47.20m). Elizabeth Robe was third with a new personal best throw of 151-8 (46.24m).
The Mizzou women 4x800-meter relay team won their event with a time of 8:53.61, setting a new meet record.
Next week, the Tigers will travel to Los Angles for UCLA's Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. The meet runs from Thursday to Saturday.
