
Missouri Wrestling Holds CMSU Scoreless

Warrensburg, Mo. - The fourth-ranked Missouri wrestling team knocked off Central Missouri State University in a 48-0 victory that included a Tiger win in each of the 10 weight classes. The most Missouri points scored all season, it was the first time in the 2003-04 campaign that Missouri held an opponent scoreless.
Opening the dual at 157 pounds, senior captain Kenny Burleson (No. 5), took a 10-0 major decision over Ryan Hunter, scoring five points in the first period with a takedown and three-point nearfall. With a reversal scored in both the second and third period, Burleson held onto 2:39 of riding time, taking the extra point and eventual win.
All-American Tyron Woodley was the second Tiger to take to the CMSU mat. Pairing with Central Missouri's Jeremy Nice at 165 pounds, the two were scoreless ending the first period, with Woodley choosing down in the second. Not far into the second period, Woodley managed a two-point reversal, followed by a two-point nearfall, closing the period 4-0. Woodley dominated in the third, scoring an early escape, takedown and two-point nearfall, with one point riding time added. In the end, Woodley scored Missouri's second 10-0 major decision.
Leading the nation in pins at 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Ben Askren scored Missouri's first fall of the night. In a time of 1:41, Askren landed Brett Barbarick on his back, bringing Missouri's team points to 14-0.
Taking the Tigers second fall, redshirt freshman Matt Pell dropped Kevin Greece in 4:33 at 184 pounds. Each wrestler was given a technical violation during the first period, and Greece took the early lead with a takedown. Ranked eighth in the nation and also leading the nation in pins at 184 pounds, Pell scored a two-point reversal, putting Greece on his back and landing the fall.
Junior Jeff Foust took his second consecutive technical fall of the season. With a final score of 18-2, Foust ended the match in 3:52. With 12 points awarded to Foust in the first period, it was the most points in the first three minutes of action by a Missouri wrestler in the night's dual.
Closing out the upperweights, senior Mike Whitehead shook hands and wrestled with CMSU's Willie McCowan. In a close match, Whitehead was able to score a second period escape and third period takedown with a final point awarded for riding time. Whitehead's decision gave Missouri a 28-0 team lead.
Missouri took two consecutive falls at 125-and 133-pounds. Austin DeVoe led the lineup at 125 pounds, scoring two takedowns and two nearfalls for a first period score of 9-1. After 4:07 of action, DeVoe was able to find his fourth fall of the season, and second consecutive.
Junior Paul Collum followed DeVoe, pinning Greg Waag in 1:03, his second fastest fall of the season.
In one of the night's hardest fought matches, redshirt freshman Amond Prater took his match against Jeremy Irvine at 141 pounds into the final seconds of competition. Exchanging shots, Prater was down in points ending both the first and second period. Entering the final two minutes of competition, Prater was down by one point but found two takedowns to Irvine's two escapes to end the match 13-12.
Junior Cody Greene ended the night for Missouri, helping the team to five more points with a technical fall over Jesse Zeugin. Greene ended the first period with the scoreboard showing 7-0, and added four points in the second with a takedown and two point nearfall. With an escape and takedown totaling three points, Greene wracked up enough riding time for the final point to put him at 15.
Missouri will head home and compete against Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. in the Hearnes Center Arena.
