
Tiger Softball Defeats Nebraska in Regular Season Finale

COLUMBIA, Mo.-- - The Missouri Softball team defeated No. 7 Nebraska 2-0 on Sunday at University Field to finish the regular season with a 31-16 record and a 12-5 Big 12 Conference mark. Mizzou will be the third seed in next week's Big 12 Tournament and will face Nebraska in the first round on Friday.
In contrast to Saturday's 11-2 Husker win, MU pitcher Erin Kalka kept Nebraska (34-13, 10-8) in control on Sunday. Kalka picked up her 10th shutout of the season as she allowed just two hits to improve to 19-10 on the season.
Mizzou manufactured each of its runs in Sunday's game with timely hitting and good base running. In the second inning, Rachael McGinnis reached on a single, stole second, advanced to third on a Jeni Schellert single and scored on a single by Ashley Hays.
The second Tigers' second run was scored by Heather Kunkel who singled, then advanced to second on a Husker error, moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Jeni Schellert and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kristen Burke.
Six Tigers recorded hits for Mizzou led by Kunkel's 2-for-3 day.
The win was the third victory for Missouri over a top-10 team this season. It also gives MU the third seed in the Big 12 Tournament which will begin on Thursday in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Tigers will begin play at 11 a.m. on Friday in a rematch with Nebraska who finishes as the sixth seed.
