
Eight Tigers Place at 3rd Annual Missouri Open

COLUMBIA, Mo. -
The Missouri Tiger wrestling team had eight wrestlers place in the 3rd annual Missouri Open. Over 500 wrestlers from 23 teams participated in what is fast becoming the biggest open meet in the midwest.
Kenny Burleson, ranked #15 in the 157 lb. weight class, made it to the championship match by defeating #14 ranked Alex Tirapelle (Illinois), 6-1. He lost in a tough match against Central Michigan's David Bolyard (#12), 4-0.
Tyron Woodley also made it to the 165 lb. championship match for the second year in a row. Just like last year he faced Illinois' Matt Lackey in the championship match. Unfortunately history repeated itself and Woodley, ranked #8, lost to #1 ranked Lackey 4-6, in what was one of the more exciting matches of he night.
Senior Kevin Herron (#24) upset Air Force All-American Kevin Hoy (#5) in the semifinals 3-2, to move on to the championship bout against #4 Leonce Crump from Oklahoma. Crump beat Herron 4-0 to take the heavyweight championship.
Fellow senior Dante Stone (#18) finished 3rd by defeating Indiana's Ty Matthews, 3-1 in overtime. J.P. Reese (#7) joined Stone as a third place finisher by defeating #2 ranked Nate Parker from Oklahoma, 4-3.
The Tigers had three fifth place finishers to round out the top placers. John Sioredas defeated Indiana's Mike Engberg 5-3. Freshman Ben Askren finished fifth, beating Andrew Wolf (Indiana) 4-2. Askren had the upset of the day, defeating Oklahoma's Robbie Waller, the #4 wrestler at 174 lbs., 10-6 in the quarterfinals before falling to #16 Pete Freidl (Illinois) 6-11. Karl Person pinned 3 three opponents enroute to his fifth place finish, pinning SIU's Wiens (1:59, 1st).
In the freshman/sophomore division, five Mizzou wrestlers placed. Matt Pell (157 lbs.) and Chris Parris (184 lbs.) both won their respected weight classes. Gabe Conaghan (165 lbs.) placed second, Joe Williamson (165 lbs.) finished fourth and Patrick Mazi (141 lbs.) placed fifth to round out the Tiger frosh top finishers.

Up next for the 10th ranked Tigers is a dual meet showdown against conference rival #1 Oklahoma State on Dec. 1 in Stillwater, Okla.
