Jeff Cottrill joined the University of Missouri softball staff in June 2022. He serves as the Tigers' hitting coach, and came to Mizzou fresh off a trip to Oklahoma City for the Women's College World Series with Oklahoma State.
Missouri is coming off a 2023 season that saw the Tigers reach a 16th straight NCAA Regional, finishing the season with a 35-26 record and going 7-17 against SEC foes. The pitching staff proved efficient yet again, registering a cumulative ERA of 3.33, including a strikeout/walk ratio of 2.66.
Alex Honnold became the 26th All-American in program history (31 total All-American honors) after earning Second-Team honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
A Top 25 Finalist for 2023 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, Honnold led Mizzou and ranked top six in the SEC for on-base percentage (.539), slugging percentage (.779), runs (52), batting average (.396), and triples (three). Her slugging percentage in 2023 ranked fourth all-time in program history. Honnold also earned NFCA Southeast All-Region honors and was named to the All-SEC Second Team.
Jenna Laird joined Honnold in representing the Tigers on the All-SEC Team, her sixth postseason honor at Mizzou and third-straight appearance on the All-SEC Team. The leadoff hitter paced the Tigers in SEC play with a .291 batting average to go with 14 runs, three doubles, five RBI, .371 on-base percentage, and a .329 slugging percentage.
Cottrill joined the Tigers after spending seven seasons with Oklahoma State, including the last five as an assistant coach. Over those five seasons, he helped the Cowgirls to three Women's College World Series appearances and a Big 12 Tournament title. After serving as the Director of Operations for two seasons, Cottrill became the Cowgirls' pitching coach for 2018 and 2019 before taking over the hitters in 2020.
In 2022, the Cowgirls again had six hitters bat over .300 while three batters finished with double-digit homers with one All-American performer. During his two seasons as the pitching coach, Oklahoma State finished with a sub-3.00 ERA in the circle each year while the Cowgirls produced one All-American.
In 2021, Oklahoma State put up impressive offensive numbers. The Cowgirls finished in the top ten nationally in home runs (93, sixth), doubles (88, eighth), runs (356, eighth), hits (488, 10th) and slugging percentage (.556, 10th). Cottrill helped two Cowgirl hitters receive NFCA All-American honors in 2021, with four hitters finishing with double-digit home run totals and six batting over .300 on the season.
Prior to his time at Oklahoma State, Cottrill worked closely with the Wichita Mustangs Softball Academy in Wichita, Kansas. He ran the team’s operations in both 2013 and 2014, while also coaching with the club for five years.
Cottrill earned his degree in business administration in 2008 from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas.
