The fifth Tiger to have his jersey (number 34) retired at MU, Smith was just the third player in Big Eight Conference history to score more than 2,000 points and grab more than 1,000 rebounds, joining Danny Manning and Wayman Tisdale. He ranks second in school history in scoring (2,184 points) and first in rebounds (1,305). Smith was the leagues player-of-the-year in 1990 and 91, an all-American and Big Eight Male Athlete-of-the-Year in 1991, and a two-time MVP of the Phillips 66 Big Eight Tournament when he led Missouri to the championship in 1989 and 91. From Detroit, Smith was the sixth player chosen in the 1991 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He spent four seasons in Dallas and played for the Boston Celtics and in the CBA. At the unveiling of the Norm Stewart statue outside Mizzou Arena, Smith gave a moving tribute speech on behalf of Stewarts former players. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
