In just four seasons as Whitten Family Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Dennis Gates has made an immediate impact and reestablished Missouri on the national stage. Now in his fifth year on the Mizzou sideline, he aims to build off his early progress as the Tigers chase championships with him leading the program.
IMMEDIATE IMPACT AT MIZZOU
Named the school’s 20th head coach on March 22, 2022, Gates has continued to elevate the Mizzou program during his four years on campus.
Gates wasted no time making a splash as he engineered the seventh-best improvement – and top among power-conference schools – during his first season on campus in 2022-23. Inheriting a team that won 12 games and returned just three players from the season before, the Tigers finished the campaign with 25 wins. The program’s highest win total in 11 years, Mizzou also advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinals for the first time in its history before capping the year with its first NCAA Tournament victory in 13 seasons.
When it was all said and done, Gates’ 25 wins were the most by any first-year SEC coach since the Tigers joined the conference in 2012 and the fifth-most in league history – trailing only Tubby Smith, John Calipari, Eddie Sutton and Trent Johnson.
The success for Gates wasn’t limited to just his first campaign, however. After securing the nation’s fifth-ranked recruiting class in November 2023, the Tigers continued to make their mark on the national stage. During the 2024-25 campaign, Mizzou earned three wins over top-five teams for the first time since 1988-89, including the program’s fifth-ever – and first since 1997 – against the nation’s top-ranked team in No. 1 Kansas. The Tigers also defeated No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Florida during the season, with the latter marking the first for the Tigers over the eventual national champions since 1983.
The momentum carried over for the Tigers in 2025-26 as Mizzou won double-digit SEC games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history. Overall, Missouri has advanced out of the most competitive conference in the country and qualified for the NCAA Tournament three times under Gates’ watch.
The experts have continued to take notice of Gates and his accomplishments in his four seasons on campus. Following his rookie season at Mizzou, Gates was honored with 2022-23 SEC Coach of the Year accolades by USA Today. He has also twice been named to the top 15 to the Naismith Coach of the Year Watch List, finishing as a top-10 semifinalist during the 2024-25 campaign in addition to NABC Central Region Coach of the Year honors.
MENTORING INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS
Individually, Gates mentored a number of student-athletes to success during their time at Mizzou, leading to postseason accolades and professional opportunities.
In his first season leading the program, Gates helped a pair of standouts in Kobe Brown and D’Moi Hodge to new heights, becoming NBA players by the end of the year. A unanimous first-team All-SEC honoree, Brown was selected in the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers – becoming the 16th player in school history to be a first-round pick. Hodge also created history as he became the first person from the British Virgin Islands to play in the NBA, signing with the Lakers after three seasons under Gates’ leadership.
In addition, Sean East II (Lakers in 2024), Tamar Bates (Nuggets in 2025), Caleb Grill (Bulls in 2025), Mark Mitchell (Nuggets in 2026) and Shawn Phillips Jr. (Pelicans in 2026) have all signed free-agent contracts after graduating from Mizzou. Overall, nine Tigers have joined NBA or G-League franchises in Gates’ four seasons at MU.
The postseason accolades have followed under Gates’ watch. Tigers have earned All-SEC accolades three times with Mizzou also collecting SEC Sixth Man of the Year honors and SEC All-Defensive Team recognition once.
Striving to be champions in the classroom, on the court and in the community, Mizzou also thrived academically in the four seasons under Gates. Brown became the first Tiger in team history to be named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while East followed suit the following season in 2023-24. Brown also became the third player in program history (and first since 1983) to earn Academic All-America honors, while the Tigers have earned recognition on the NABC Honors Court 15 times – the team’s eight selections in 2023 were the second-most nationally.
HEAD COACHING DEBUT AT CLEVELAND STATE
Gates joined the Tigers following a three-year run as head coach at Cleveland State, leading the Vikings to two Horizon League Championships and back-to-back postseason appearances.
Gates rebuilt the Vikings program into the premier program in the conference – winning 50 games in his three seasons, including a 39-19 mark his final two campaigns. CSU won two Horizon League regular-season titles (2021, 2022), the 2021 Horizon League Tournament Championship and earned berths in the NCAA Tournament (2021) and Postseason NIT (2022).
The first-time head coach didn’t take long to make an impact as Gates was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year following his debut season in 2019-20 and repeated the honor his second year in charge in 2020-21. CSU broke the 20-win plateau in 2021-22 – a first for the program since 2013-14 – with its NCAA Tournament in 2021 its first in 12 years.
PATH TO BECOMING A HEAD COACH
Gates, who has 20 years of Division I coaching experience, came to Cleveland State after eight seasons on Leonard Hamilton's staff at Florida State. Gates' tenure at FSU mirrored the Seminoles’ rise to national prominence with Florida State playing in four NCAA Tournaments, advancing to the Elite Eight in 2018 and the Sweet 16 in both 2012 and 2019.
Gates was instrumental in recruiting four straight top-15 classes at Florida State, which produced five NBA Draft picks over four years, including one lottery pick. Overall, he helped recruit seven top-100 players to the Seminoles during his tenure in Tallahassee.
Before joining the staff at Florida State, Gates worked at Marquette, Cal, Northern Illinois and Nevada. During his coaching career, he has served on staffs that have made 12 postseason appearances. Gates also worked as a skill development coach with the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers (2002-03).
A combo guard at California, Gates served as a three-year captain, playing in 114 career games. He helped lead Cal to three 20-win seasons and was a two-time Pac-10 First Team All-Academic Team selection. Gates was also named the team’s Most Inspirational Player in 2001, its Outstanding Student-Athlete in 1999 and 2001 and was awarded the 2002 Pac-10 Medal of Honor, which is presented to the Pac-10 Universities Top Graduating Student-Athlete.
Gates earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from UC Berkeley in just three years and played a fourth year as a master's degree candidate in education. He earned his master's in adult education and human resource development from Florida State in 2005.
The Chicago native is married to Jocelyn. The Gates family includes daughter, Avery, and sons, Duke and Denver.
