One of the most dominant teams in Mizzou athletics in any sport, the Coach Hi Simmons 1964 Tigers finished the year as national runners-up. They posted a 27-5-1 overall record, including a perfect 19-0 conference record to claim Mizzous fourth-straight Big Eight title. The pitching staff led the nation with a miniscule 0.65 earned run average that still stands as the NCAA record that may never be broken. Tiger pitchers were so dominant that they allowed one or fewer runs 21 times, with nine shutouts. At the College World Series in Omaha, MU beat Arizona State (7-0), dropped a 3-2 decision to USC, then beat Seton Hall (3-1), Minnesota (4-1) and Maine (2-1) before falling 5-1 to Minnesota in the title game. Two members of the team  Dave Harvey and Keith Weber  were first-team all-Americans  and have each been inducted into the MU Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. Nine team members were all-Big Eight, including four on the first team, and 11 members of the team signed professional baseball contracts.
