LEXINGTON, Ky. – Mizzou baseball dropped game two of its three-game Southeastern Conference series to No. 24 Kentucky, 9-2, Saturday afternoon at Kentucky Proud Park as the Wildcats evened the series at one game apiece.
Kentucky (23-7, 6-5 SEC) jumped out to an early lead after plating a pair of runs in the first inning and added an unearned run in the second inning to make it a 3-0 advantage.
Lefty Brady Kehlenbrink made his eighth start of the season on the mound for the Tigers (18-14, 2-9 SEC) and ran into trouble in the third inning. After retiring two of the first three batters he faced, the Wildcats struck for a two-out RBI single off the bat of Tagger Tyson before loading the bases up for Scott Campbell Jr., who delivered the big blow of the inning with a grand slam, swelling the UK lead to eight.
Mizzou got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when catcher Mateo Serna drove in freshman Blaize Ward with a single through the right side. The Tigers got their second run of the inning when Donovan Jordan came home on an RBI fielder's choice put in play by Tyler Macon.
Freshman RHP Luke Sullivan entered in relief of Kehlenbrink and was steady, throwing up zeroes for three-plus innings before finally being tagged for an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth. The Wildcats pushed the run across with an RBI bunt single that scored the leadoff batter of the inning who had reached on a Mizzou error.
The Tigers were unable to string any offense together after the fifth, dropping the game 9-2 as the 24th-ranked Wildcats evened the series and forced a Sunday rubber match to decide the series.
