COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou baseball's comeback effort fell short in the series opener against No. 25 Texas A&M, as the Tigers rallied back from a nine-run deficit, eventually falling 11-9 on Friday night at Taylor Stadium.
Right-hander Josh McDevitt worked through some trouble early in the first inning, but limited Texas A&M (20-5, 3-4 SEC) to just one run. The Tigers (17-10, 1-6 SEC) answered in the second, tying the game at one run apiece. Cameron Benson led off the frame with a double to deep right field before being driven in later in the inning on a Donovan Jordan sacrifice fly.
The Aggies had a big fourth inning, pushing across seven runs on five hits against a trio of Tiger arms to take an 8-1 lead. Texas A&M added two more runs in the fifth inning to grow its lead to 10-1.
Mizzou responded with a massive inning of its own, striking for a six-run fifth. With one out, Keegan Knutson began the Tigers' rally with a single, followed by consecutive hits from the next four batters, including RBI singles from Pierre Seals and Jase Woita, cutting the deficit to six. With Woita's RBI single, he extended his on-base streak to 22 games. Benson added to the offensive outburst, cashing in with a frozen rope three-run shot to make it 10-7.
Redshirt-sophomore LHP Jackson Sobel worked 2.2 scoreless innings for the Tigers, allowing just one hit and striking out three to keep it a three-run game.
A home run by Woita and an RBI single from Mateo Serna continued the comeback effort in the seventh, adding two more runs to the Mizzou column and making it a one-run game.
In the eighth, the Tigers were unable to capitalize on a lead-off double from Kam Durnin after he knocked his third hit of the game.
Freshman Eli Skidmore relieved Sobel to start the eighth and posted a pair of hitless innings, surrendering one run on a fielder's choice in the ninth. The Tigers were unable to string together anything in the bottom half of the ninth as the comeback effort ultimately fell short.
