COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball extended its winning streak to 13 games, defeating Southern Indiana 14-6 at Taylor Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers improved to 15-2 on the season while Southern Indiana dropped to 12-5 on the year and had its four-game win streak snapped.
Mizzou used a relentless offensive attack to earn the win, as sophomore Chris Patterson and junior Kam Durnin each hit their second home runs of the season.
Southern Indiana got on the board early with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to take the lead, but the Tigers responded quickly by putting up a three spot in the bottom half of the inning. Kaden Peer got things started with a single to left field and then proceeded to steal second on the next pitch. Durnin followed up with a double off the left-field wall that brought Peer in to score from second to square things up at one a piece. Cameron Benson continued his tear with an RBI single, bringing Durnin home to give Mizzou the lead. After a stolen base from Benson, Pierre Seals extended the lead with a double that took a big bounce off the turf and over the left-center field wall, scoring Benson to put the Tigers up 3-1 after one.
Mizzou extended its lead in the third with a solo shot from Durnin, his second home run of the season after returning from injury last Thursday against UIC to make his Tiger debut. MU added five more runs in the fourth inning with a leadoff, hustle double up the middle from freshman Blaize Ward, followed by a towering two-run shot (397 ft.) from Patterson. With two outs in the inning, a balk bases-loaded balk followed by a wild pitch, brought Tyler Macon and Durnin home to give the Tigers an 8-1 lead. The inning was capped off by an RBI single to left field from Seals, bringing Benson in to score from third base.
Freshman RHP Luke Sullivan made his second start of the season (fifth appearance), throwing 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on five hits. Later in the fifth, righty Eli Skidmore entered to get the Tigers out of a jam with the bases loaded and just one out, managing to strikeout back-to-back USI batters after surrendering a walk and a hit. Skidmore finished the day going 1.2 innings with three punchouts. The Screaming Eagles' four, fifth inning runs came courtesy of a three-run homer to left-center field from the USI first baseman and an RBI single later in the inning, which cut the Missouri lead to four.
The Tigers' offense responded in the home half of the fifth with two runs of its own. Ward reached to open the inning on an HBP, then stole second base. Patterson moved him over to third on a sac fly to deep right field, and Eric Maisonet drove Ward in with a triple into the left-field corner to make it 10-5, Mizzou. With just one out, Macon drove a ball to deep right field that was caught but allowed Maisonet to tag and score standing up, good for Macon's 25th RBI of the season.
RHP Trey Lawrence replaced Skidmore on the bump to start the seventh, tossing two scoreless innings where he allowed just two hits and punched out one Screaming Eagle.
Peer extended Missouri's lead with the bases loaded in the seventh, delivering an RBI fielder's choice on a ball hit to the second baseman that brought Patterson in to score from third base. Durnin drove in Maisonet on a single to right field for his third RBI of the day, putting the Tigers up 14-6.
LHP Juan Villarreal relieved Lawrence in the ninth to close things out, retiring the side on just eight pitches.
