COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou baseball fell to No. 6 Auburn, 2-0, in game one of its opening Southeastern Conference series of the season Friday night at Taylor Stadium. LHP Javyn Pimental threw six scoreless innings before an eighth-inning, two-run homer marked the lone runs in the ballgame. Mizzou put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth but was unable to find the equalizer.
Pierre Seals got things started for the Tigers (15-3, 0-1 SEC) in the fourth with a one-out double to deep right field for the teams' second hit of the day but was left stranded, sending the defense back out for the fifth in a 0-0 pitching battle.
Pimental was dominant on the bump, throwing six scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and punching out five Auburn (15-2, 1-0 sec) batters. With two outs in the sixth and his pitch count approaching triple digits, Pimental was able to get the strikeout to keep it a 0-0 ballgame.
Righty JD Dohrmann entered out of the bullpen to begin the seventh, replacing Pimental. After giving up two straight base hits, a bunt attempt from Auburn ended with a double play thanks to a great play by Tyler Macon charging in to field the bunt and throw to first, leaving them with a runner on third and just one out to spare. Dohrmann was able to escape the Auburn threat, getting the third out on a groundout to shortstop Kam Durnin.
Auburn took a 2-0 lead in the eighth with a two-run homer on a full count. With one out in the top of the eighth, difficulties with the lights took the game into an hour and forty-minute delay.
Following the delay, righty Keyler Gonzalez relieved Dohrmann, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings to finish the game, giving up no hits and punching out two Auburn batters, keeping it a 2-0 game to give Mizzou's offense a chance in the ninth.
The Missouri offense was sparked by back-to-back one-out singles from Cameron Benson and Mateo Serna in the ninth. Seals managed to move the runners up on a groundout to the right side of the infield, giving Chris Patterson a chance with two outs and runners on second and third. A pop out to the first baseman on the first pitch ended Mizzou's impressive 13-game win streak.
