The Tigers are now 2-6, as they move to 1-3 against ranked teams.
Mizzou softball (2-6) dropped both legs of the doubleheader to open the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational on Friday, Feb. 13, at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
The Tigers' bats came alive in both outings, as they dropped the first game against NC State (3-3), 13-7, and the second game versus No. 6 UCLA (6-1), 6-5.
NC State 13, Mizzou 7
The Wolfpack were the first to strike in this one, as two home runs allowed four runs to reach the plate in the bottom of the first.
The Tigers would start to chip away at the lead with a two-run home run for themselves, from senior outfielder Kayley Lenger. This was Lenger's first of the year and seventh of her career.
However, a big third inning put the game out of reach as the Wolfpack scored two on an error and added one more before a grand slam made it 11-2.
Doubles from sophomore Madison Uptegrove and freshman Abby Carr, alongside some help from NC State's defense, gave the Tigers seven runs.
No. 6 UCLA 6, Mizzou 5
Mizzou had a top-ranked UCLA squad on the ropes for the majority of this one, as it would go up 5-1 after the third inning.
Those five runs were highlighted by two home runs, one from Sidney Forrester in the first – first of her career – and a solo shot by sophomore Sophie Smith in the third – first of the season. Both Abby's would get involved in the third as Carr doubled to right center and Hay just missed a home run with a double off the top of the wall.
Forrester went 2-for-4 in this game, bringing her multi-hit total to 2 this season and pushing her batting average to .308. Smith also recorded her second multi-hit game of the season, putting her at a .273 average this season.
UCLA battled back from this 5-1 deficit and tied it in the fifth and eventually took the lead with Megan Grant's second home run of the game. The Bruins scored five of their six runs on home runs, and all runs came via extra base hits – a double in the third inning.
