Smith’s Freshman of the Week Honors Come After Leading Conference in Blocks, Setting Career High in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou volleyball athlete Eva Smith (Durham, N.C.) was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after a weekend where she notched 16 blocks, including a career-high nine on Friday at South Carolina, and 11 kills with a .321 hitting percentage.

Smith’s nine blocks on Friday were the most by a Tiger this season and her 16 blocks and 2.29 blocks per set were the most in the SEC last week.

She fell a block shy of a double-double against the Gamecocks in a match that lasted three sets, after also tallying a career-high 10 kills on a .500 hitting percentage.

On Sunday, she logged seven additional blocks at Georgia, including a solo block in the decisive fourth set.

Smith has notched 83 blocks this season, the most on the Black and Gold and fifth-most in the SEC, and is averaging 1.08 blocks per set. She has started each of Missouri’s 21 matches in her first season and has appeared in 77 of its 79 sets.

Smith and the Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 30 in Lexington, Kentucky as they take on No. 7-ranked Kentucky at Memorial Coliseum at 6 p.m. CDT.
