Soccer Scores Three Unanswered to Top Texas A&M 3-2

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou soccer erased an early two-goal deficit with three unanswered goals Thursday night, rallying past Texas A&M 3-2 at Audrey J. Walton Stadium.

Freshman Rylie Morse (Lebanon, Ohio) tied the match as the first-half clock expired and set up the winner 59 seconds into the second half, and senior Brianna Buels (Indianapolis, Ind.) came off the bench to head home the go-ahead goal as the Tigers (5-9-2, 2-6-1 SEC) earned their first win of the season after conceding the opening goal against the Aggies (4-11-1, 0-8-1 SEC). It marked Missouri’s largest comeback win in SEC play since Oct. 23, 2016.

“We settled into the game and started getting the ball into the wide space,” head coach Stefanie Golan said. “I thought the players out there were doing a great job tearing down the left side. When Brianna went in, I thought she made a big difference on the right side. The players just came together, and they knew what we were fighting for.”

The Aggies started hot, finding the net in the fifth and seventh minutes to put the Tigers in a 2-0 hole.

Missouri answered in the 24th minute, when freshman Lana Adams (Perryville, Mo.) found senior defender Taryn Chance (Stafford, Va.) at the top of the box, and Chance launched a shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

Missouri drew level in the final seconds of the first half. Morse’s corner kick found junior Emily Derucki (Wildwood, Mo.)at the back post, and Derucki slid it back across the face of goal for Morse to finish in the 45th minute, sending the teams to the locker room tied 2-2. It marks the first time this season the Tigers scored multiple goals in the first half of a conference match.

The Tigers carried the momentum straight into the second half. Just 59 seconds after the restart, Morse delivered a free kick into the box and Buels rose to head it home in the 46th minute, completing the Black & Gold’s comeback. It was Buels’ fourth goal of the season and her first game-winner of the year.

Senior goalkeeper Riley Wilkerson (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) turned away both of the Aggies’ second-half shots on goal, with saves in the 49th and 53rd minutes, to keep Texas A&M off the board the rest of the way. Missouri held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks and put five of its nine shots on goal.
