Swimming and Diving Receives Historic Alumni Gift

Denny and Carla Boyd Donate to Program, MU to Dedicate Area as Denny Boyd Pool at the Mizzou Aquatic Center

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri and Mizzou Athletics proudly announced today a significant gift from alumni Denny and Carla Boyd to support improvements for the competition pool and aquatic area located in the MU Recreation Center.

The gift represents a collaborative effort between the Division of Student Affairs and Mizzou Athletics. The area will be dedicated as the Denny Boyd Pool at the Mizzou Aquatic Center during a ceremony taking place on Nov. 6.

“Denny Boyd’s extraordinary generosity reflects the very best of what it means to be a Tiger. His investment in Mizzou Swimming and Diving will have a lasting impact on our program and the Mizzou Aquatic Center for years to come,” Mizzou Director of Athletics Laird Veatch said. “His support helps ensure that our program has the resources and environment to continue building on its proud history and create opportunities for future generations of Tigers.”

Denny was a member of the swimming and diving team from 1972-76 and held multiple school records during his time as a Tiger, including the 100 and 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley.

“Mizzou has always been a special part of my life. My years as a student-athlete on the swim team gave me far more than an education. They taught me the value of hard work, discipline, teamwork and friendships that last a lifetime,” said Boyd, a 1976 Mizzou graduate.

“Some of my fondest memories were made in and around that pool. I've always believed that when a place has given you so much, you have a responsibility to give something back. My hope is that this gift will help future generations of Tigers enjoy the same opportunities, build their own memories and develop the same lifelong connection to Mizzou that I have. I'm proud to be a Tiger, and it's a privilege to give back to a university that has meant so much to me and my family,” he added.

The state-of-the-art pool features a movable hydraulic floor, advanced UV water purification technology and world-class competition capabilities that support both elite student-athletes and major championship events.

“We are deeply grateful for Denny and Carla’s incredible generosity and vision. Working with Denny through this process has been an absolute joy, and his focus from day one has been entirely selfless,” Director of Swimming and Diving Andrew Grevers said.  “His top priority has always been finding ways to help us elevate Mizzou Swimming and Diving to the national stage. I am so thankful to both Denny and Carla for their incredible support, and we are thrilled that the Denny Boyd Pool at the Mizzou Aquatic Center will continue to serve as a world-class venue where our program can compete with the best in the country.”

The Mizzou Aquatic Center has hosted some of the nation's most prestigious swimming competitions, including multiple Missouri Grand Prix meets, Big 12 Conference Championships and the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships.

The space is designed to meet the highest standards of competition and reflects Mizzou's commitment to excellence in athletics, student success, and championship performance.
