A pair of buzzer-beating 3-pointers from Trent Pierce and Mark Mitchell gave Mizzou men's basketball an 88-87 win over Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers climb to 14-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play while the Sooners move to 11-9 on the season and 1-6 in SEC games.
Trailing by three in regulation, Pierce sunk one from the midcourt logo to force overtime – his first basket of the game. After Oklahoma took the lead with under five seconds remaining, Mitchell gave the Tigers the victory with a game-clinching triple as time expired.
MIZZOU LEADERS
Overall, Mitchell picked up his second double-double of the season and fifth of his collegiate career with 25 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Mitchell led the Tigers in all three of the categories.
Sophomore T.O. Barrett posted a career-high 21 points in his first collegiate start. Barrett also matched career-best totals in rebounds and steals, with six and three, respectively. Graduate Jayden Stone added 20 points and seven boards of his own.
The trio was the first group of as many Tigers to score at least 20 points in the same game since Nov. 17, 2016, when Frankie Hughes, Kevin Puryear and Terrence Phillips all crossed the 20-point threshold against Xavier.
GAME RECAP
Mizzou opened the game up 4-0, with the first four points belonging to Shawn Phillips Jr., before exchanging baskets with the Sooners throughout the first six minutes of action. A 6-0 Tiger run gave MU a six-point lead - it's largest of the first half with nine of the first 15 Missouri points credited to Stone.
Later, OU used a 10-2 run of its own to take its first lead, 21-19, just past the halfway point of the opening half. The teams were deadlocked from there, drawing even on four separate occasions over the next five minutes bringing the score to 32 apiece. The defenses controlled the closing minutes of the first half as Oklahoma took a 37-36 edge into the break. Mitchell and Stone were each in double figures with 11 first half points to lead Mizzou.
In the opening five minutes of the second half the teams continued to trade scores, with 10 lead changes coming before the 14-minute mark. Then, a 6-0 Sooners run over two minutes propelled the visitors in front, 52-47, forcing a Missouri timeout.
Mizzou jumped back in front, 55-53, using an 8-1 stretch out of the timeout punctuated by a pair of Jacob Crews 3-pointers. The Sooners answered with back-to-back makes from long distance to regain their lead with 10 minutes to play.
Oklahoma stretched its lead out to six, the largest of the game for the Sooners, at the six-minute mark before eight unanswered points by Missouri gave the Tigers a 72-70 edge coming out of the under four stoppage. Stone and Barrett each converted on three-point plays during the span.
The closing five minutes saw five lead changes and a tie, and after a miss on the offensive end, Oklahoma made a pair of free throws to claim a three-point lead with just over five seconds remaining before Pierce's buzzer-beating three, tying the game at 81 and forcing overtime.
In the extra period, Oklahoma picked up an early edge and carried no greater than a two-point lead throughout most of overtime, Missouri forced a pair of ties, one with 24 seconds left thanks to a Barrett layup – the sophomore provided four of MU's seven overtime points – before Xzayvier Brown gave the Sooners the lead back, 87-85, with five seconds left. With no timeouts, Mitchell received the inbounds and drove down the court with his three beating the horn to give Mizzou an 88-87 win.
Mitchell's shot was the first buzzer-beater to give Mizzou a win since DeAndre Gholston's shot to beat Tennessee on Feb. 11, 2023.
