COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou men's basketball team dropped its contest on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 20 Arkansas, 88-84. The Tigers are now 20-11 on the year and 10-8 in SEC play, while the Razorbacks are 23-8 overall and 13-5 in league play.
MIZZOU LEADERS
Senior Mark Mitchell led the Tigers with a career-best and game-high 32 points, while adding four rebounds and four assists.
Senior Shawn Phillips Jr. had his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Trent Pierce also scored 13 points, while nabbing six rebounds.
Graduate student Jayden Stone and sophomore T.O. Barrett also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
GAME RECAP
After a close start, the visitors used a 17-2 run to pull in front by double digits, 28-13. The Razorbacks took advantage of eight early turnovers by the Tigers to take control of the game early. Mizzou, however, would answer – using a 12-2 run to cut the lead to five, 37-32 with 1:30 left to play in the half, highlighted by Stone and Pierce triples.
A Mitchell layup before the buzzer would cut the Razorback lead to three at the half. MU ended the half on a 16-4 run in total for a 39-36 score.
Out of half, the Tigers used a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the night, 45-44, highlighted by a Phillips slam on a lob from Mitchell. The Tigers lead would reach as many as five before Arkansas responded and set up a tight final stretch.
Neither team would lead by more than two points for the final eight minutes of regulation and with 52 seconds to play, a Mitchell converted-and-one put the Tigers up one, 74-73. A late free throw by Arkansas sent the game to overtime.
Out of overtime, a Pierce triple put the Tigers up one, 77-76. A 5-0 run by the visitors would put Arkansas up four, 81-77, only for the Tigers to answer back with five-straight for a one-point edge. A late 3-pointer, however, and just enough free throws would allow Arkansas to earn the four-point victory.
