MUSKOKA LAKES, Ontario — Mizzou men's golf wrapped up the Canadian Collegiate Invitational in fifth place Tuesday, posting a 15-over-par 299 in the final round to finish at 25-over for the tournament. Senior Veikka Viskari led the Tigers once again, carding a 1-under 70 to finish third individually at 4-under par.
Viskari continued his strong play throughout the final round, turning in an even-par 35 on the front nine before matching that score with an one-under 35 on the back. The senior recorded two birdies and finished the tournament with back-to-back rounds under par, securing his fifth career top-five finish.
Viskari posted the lowest score out of any golfer in the second round with a 66, then tied for the lowest final round score with a 70 on Tuesday.
"We saw some really challenging conditions in Canada this week with the colder weather, high winds and rain. The course played much tougher than what we’ve seen here the last couple of years, so overall I’m happy with how my game held up," Viskari said. "Being in contention coming down the stretch is always where you want to be and it was nice to post the low round of the day in each of the final two rounds. With that said, it definitely stings to come up just short.”
Junior Trent Mierl also finished inside the top 10, carding a 1-over 72 on Tuesday to finish the tournament at 2-over par and tied for ninth. Mierl’s placement marks his eighth career top-10 finish individually.
Mizzou's final-round total of 15-over par moved the Tigers to 25-over for the tournament, securing a fifth-place finish in the 13-team field.
"It was a really challenging day today as the course and weather were tough," Head Coach Glen Millican said. "Veikka and Trent played incredible golf and the others hung in there after rough starts. Overall, we handled things well and came away with a good finish."
Freshman Antoni Hawkins carded a 7-over 78 in the final round to finish at 15-over par in the tournament, while Senior Brock Snyder posted an 8-over round and wrapped up at 17-over.
Paxton Maxwell closed out the tournament with a 10-over 81, finishing at 15-over par overall. Andy Yang, competing as an individual, carded an 11-over 82 in the final round to finish at 24-over par.
"As a team, we didn’t have our best stuff this week, but being able to grind out a top-five finish when things aren’t going our way is a positive sign this early in the season," Viskari said. "Small wins stack up and we’re looking forward to getting back into action in New Mexico."
