COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou quarterback Austin Simmons alongside defensive end Daeden Hopkins were named Southeastern Conference Players of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning.
Simmons shined in the StorageMart Border Showdown win over rival Kansas, completing 19-of-29 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns to help the Tigers secure bragging rights for the fifth-straight matchup in the series. He was named co-SEC Offensive Player of the Week along with Texas’ Arch Manning who led the Longhorns to a win over then-No. 1 Ohio State over the weekend.
In addition to the SEC honor, Simmons was named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 for his performance.
Hopkins, a sophomore from Hermann, Missouri, had a breakout game on the other side of the ball and created havoc all night long in the Jayhawks’ backfield. He recorded 4.5 tackles, including 1.5 sacks while adding five quarterback pressures and a pass deflection to help lead the Tigers to the rivalry win. His performance earned him co-SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
The No. 20 Tigers return home on Saturday, Sept. 19 to host Troy (2-0) for the Memorial Stadium 100th Anniversary Game at 6 p.m. CT. Mizzou will be aiming for its 16th-straight non-conference victory in addition to its 16th-consecutive regular season win in night games.
