No. 22 Mizzou Volleyball (7-3) carried the momentum from the beginning of the match and held that, as the Tigers swept Chicago State (0-9), 25-9, 25-8, 25-15, on Friday, Sept. 19, at Western Hall in Macomb, Ill.
The Tigers posted 15 service aces, as redshirt junior Marina Crownover led the charge with five.
KEY PLAYERS
- Redshirt senior Tyrah Ariail recorded a career high four service aces and added four kills while hitting 1.000
- Freshman Paige Felder recorded a new career high in kills (8) and aces (3).
- Freshman Asia Harvey posted seven kills in the affair and added two total blocks.
- Freshman Nina Mandovic tallied 17 assists and one ace.
FIRST SET (25-9, Mizzou leads 1-0)
The Tigers were not messing around against the Cougars, as they opened up the float gates early to force a timeout. Mizzou started the match on an 8-2 scoring stretch, as everyone was getting involved early with kills from deMarrais, Alexander, Johnson, and Ariail.
Before long, Chicago State had exhausted another timeout once the score was 14-5. That trend continued, as everyone was involved in the Tigers' largest set victory this season, 25-9.
Eight players earned kills, and five players had multiple kills in this set, which saw the Tigers hitting .625.
SECOND SET (25-8, Mizzou leads 2-0)
The dominance of the first set slowed in the second, as the Cougars were able to stay ahead early. However, that was short-lived, even as the Tigers started to rotate in their younger players, as Mizzou went up 9-4 before Chicago State called a timeout.
MU extended that lead after the timeout, as the Cougars would take another one as they trailed 14-7. The Tigers would finish the set on an 11-8 run, as they once again posted another milestone set victory.
During that set, Mizzou posted a .286 hitting percentage, and tied its first set output with six service aces just like they did in the first.
THIRD SET (25-23, Mizzou wins 3-0)
The third set was there to finalize the score, as the trend of success continued for the Tigers. Chicago State held it close through the first six points – 3-3 – but quickly fell victim to another long stretch of scoring from MU.
The Cougars would take a breather with another timeout, but not before the score was 15-5 in favor of the Tigers. In the third set, multiple players got playing time and showed out. Freshman Maca Lobaglio, Asia Harvey, and redshirt freshman Tia Phinezy all earned kills and blocks.
While the third set wasn't as dominant, the Tigers still showed out as they ended with a ten-point advantage.
