COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 15/16 University of Missouri men's basketball came up short after a Wade Taylor IV three in the waning seconds of the game lifted No. 10/13 Texas A&M to a victory, 67-64, Saturday afternoon in front of a sold-out Mizzou Arena.
The Tigers saw their 15-game home winning streak snapped, falling to 17-6 on the season and 6-4 in SEC play, while Texas A&M improved to 18-5 overall and 7-3 in conference action.
MIZZOU LEADERS
Senior guard Tamar Bates led the Tigers with 16 points. Graduate forward Jacob Crews also tallied 14 points with three triples, while Mark Mitchell added a dozen points on the day.
Freshman Marcus Allen led the way for the Tigers on the glass, tallying six rebounds, his second time leading the Tigers in that category.
GAME RECAP
After a slow start for Mizzou – falling behind, 12-0 – Crews ignited the Tigers to erase the early deficit. Crews buried three quick triples to help knot the game at 20. The Aggies, however, responded with a 14-3 run of their own to regain the lead, taking advantage of the glass. From there, Mizzou used the free throw line to generate offense, converting 6-of-8 opportunities, but still trailed by nine at the halftime break, 38-29.
The teams traded punches to begin the second stanza before Perkins and Mitchell came alive. The pair combined to score the first 12 points of the frame for the Tigers to cut the lead to five.
The contest remained tight as both teams put forth a strong defensive effort before a Caleb Grill alley-oop dunk ignited the Tigers. From there, the Tigers went on a 12-0 run and took their first lead of the day with an Allen layup, 51-49, with 8:55 remaining.
The teams then went back-and-forth for the remainder of the game, each taking and relinquishing leads. Bates connected on an alley-oop to give Mizzou a one-point lead, 64-63, with 56.7 seconds remaining. However, Texas A&M connected on 1-of-2 free throws before Taylor's winner with 2.1 seconds left.
