Evansville Takes Series Opener from Baseball, 7-6

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Evansville used a three-run, seventh-inning rally to overcome a late deficit and edge University of Missouri baseball by a 7-6 score in the two clubs' series opener Friday evening at Taylor Stadium.

Evansville left-hander Kenton Deverman (1-1) worked 7.0 strong innings, striking out five and scattering four runs on seven hits, before Kellen Roberts closed out the decision with two hitless innings of relief for the Aces. Led by three-hit performances from Harrison Taubert and Cal McGinnis, UE totaled 14 hits to overcome a four-error night by its defense and outlast Mizzou.

Trailing 5-3 with one out in the decisive seventh inning, the Purple Aces strung together five straight singles to mount the game's key rally. Cal McGinnis drove in his third run of the night to slice the margin to a single run, before Evan Waggoner's soft liner to center field fell in for an RBI single that evened the score. Charlie Longmeier followed with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home McGinnis with the go-ahead tally.

UE (2-6) added a critical insurance run in the top of the eighth, as Ty Rumsey's triple into the right-field corner chased home Drew Howard to make it a 7-5 game.

That run would prove to be the difference after the Tigers (4-5) scored a run of their own in the home half of the eighth. Brock Daniels led off the inning by drawing a walk, stealing second and moving to third on a throwing error. Trey Lawrence drove him in with a chopper to short, trimming the deficit to one run.

Roberts, however, locked down his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth. Cayden Nicoletto coaxed a one-out walk, but Roberts responded with back-to-back strikeouts to extinguish the threat and preserve the one-run victory.

Mateo Serna powered the Mizzou offense, finishing 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season in the bottom of the first to negate a McGinnis solo shot that opened the scoring in the top half of the inning. Kaden Peer added two hits for the Tigers, in addition to his sacrifice fly that put MU on top, 4-3, in the fourth inning.

The Tigers rallied from a 3-1 deficit by scoring four times in the fourth, after Tyler Macon's leadoff double initiated the scoring opportunity. Mizzou used three bunts to engineer the rally, including a run-scoring, fielder's choice sacrifice by Peyton Basler, and a bunt single by Lawrence. Serna's two-out single to center extended the MU lead to 5-3, giving the sophomore his second RBI of the game.

MU starter Ian Lohse made the lead stand through his 5.0 innings, over which the lefty fanned six Aces and allowed just two earned runs on six hits. Reliever James Vaughn (1-1) took over to start the sixth and promptly set the Aces down in order before UE mounted its comeback in the seventh.
