Tennis Falls Short in First SEC Match

COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri tennis fell short to No. 31 Vanderbilt, 7-0, at Green Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 23. Missouri is now (8-2, 0-1 SEC) and Vanderbilt is (8-1, 1-0 SEC).
First to finish in doubles was graduate student Lailaa Bashir and freshman Gian Octa losing 6-2 on court three, followed by senior Mary Brumfield and junior Andrea Artimedi who dropped their match 6-2 as well on court two. Freshman-senior duo, Korina Roso and Inah Canete, had their match go unfinished against Vanderbilt's 12th nationally ranked No. 1 pair (2-5).
The Tigers fought hard but ultimately fell short in singles. Canete and Bashir all competed against nationally ranked-singles players. Bashir put up a battle on court two but ended up losing her match 6-4, 6-3. Roso put in the work on court three but lost in a back-and-forth tie break 6-3, 1-6, 12-14.

"Overall today we could have done a much better job. We did not show up with the competitive spirit we needed. We failed as a team to really test Vanderbilt and put them under pressure. We had too slow of a start in singles and did not bounce back after doubles at all and that set the tone for the whole match. Credit to Lailaa and Korina they played good matches at #2 and #5 singles."

The Tigers will welcome No. 22 Alabama on Friday, Feb. 28 at Green Tennis Center or Country Club of Missouri at 11 a.m. CT and Mississippi on Sunday, March 2 at noon CT.
