Tennis Falls in Hard Fought Match Against No.17 Alabama

COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri tennis fell short to No. 17 Alabama, 4-1, at the Country Club of Missouri on Friday, Feb. 28. Missouri is now 9-3 (0-2 SEC) and Alabama is 8-3 (2-0 SEC).
The freshman-senior duo Korina Roso and Inah Canete fought hard but fell short, 6-3. Going unfinished but in the lead were junior Andrea Artimedi and senior Mary Brumfield (5-4) on court three as Alabama claimed the doubles point.
The Tigers did not give up and had a mentality of fighting until the end throughout singles. Graduate student Lailaa Bashir, finishing second on court three, defeated Alabama's Maria Martinez-Vaque, 6-2, 6-4. Brumfield battled hard going up against No. 84 Petra Sedlackova but after a close match, fell short 6-4, 6-3 on court one. Canete on court two and Artimedi on court five fought back, forcing a third set.

"We performed better today than last week against Vanderbilt. We brought a higher level on the court against a well-ranked opposing team and showed better competitiveness. Today, there was a lot of positives. We need good practice tomorrow to prepare for our match Sunday. It was a great win for Lailaa in singles. She had a very good result."

The Tigers will welcome No. 55 Mississippi State on Sunday, March 2 at noon CT at Green Tennis Center or Columbia Country Club.
