CAGUAS, PUERTO RICO – Utilizing a pair of home runs, University of Missouri baseball picked up its first win of the 2025 season, an 11-7 triumph over (RV) Connecticut on Saturday night in the Puerto Rico Challenge.
Jackson Lovich and Mateo Serna each notched their first home runs of the season and both drove home three runs in the winning effort.
Mizzou was able to grant starting pitcher Daniel Wissler an early cushion in the second inning when Lovich's leadoff single was paid off by a Peer double, putting the Tigers ahead 1-0. UConn jumped back ahead by a run after plating two in the visitor half of the third before another Peer RBI evened things at two apiece.
Mizzou broke the 2-2 tie in the fifth after Lovich took Huskies starter Ian Cooke deep for a pair of runs putting an end to his outing.
After UConn added another in the top of the sixth, Mizzou's offense erupted for six runs before any outs were recorded. The inning opened with Cameron Benson reaching third after a fielding error in the outfield, then Trey Lawrence drew a base on balls before Peyton Basler and Gehrig Goldbeck hit consecutive singles to score two runs. Two extra base hits gave MU an increased lead as Brock Daniels' RBI double represented one of his three hits on the day, then Serna capped the stretch with a three-run round tripper.
Kaden Jacobi (1-0) earned the win in 3.2 innings of relief. Jacobi worked through innings four, five and six smoothly before UConn answered back with four runs in the top of the seventh. Three doubles scored all of the runs for the Huskies before Nic Smith entered to close the inning.
Lovich brought home an insurance run in the eighth, giving Missouri an 11-7 lead.
MU used a pair of relievers, Wil Libbert and Xavier Lovett, to shut the Huskies offense down in the final two innings. Both logged a strikeout and only allowed one base runner through the final six outs.
