No. 14 Wrestling Drops Conference Opener at No. 15 Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – No. 14 University of Missouri wrestling dropped a hard-fought road contest to No. 15 Northern Iowa 22-14 on Sunday, Dec. 14. Missouri's record falls to 6-6 on the season (0-1 Big 12), with UNI moving to 3-2 (2-0 Big 12). Missouri won four out of 10 contested matches and secured one bonus point win.
UNI opened up the dual with three consecutive wins, until redshirt senior Josh Edmond halted the Panthers' momentum with a decision at 149 pounds to put Mizzou on the board. Redshirt junior J Conway followed him at 157 pounds with another win for the Tigers by a 6-3 decision to set the score at 10-6 in Northern Iowa's favor at the halfway point.
At 184 pounds, No. 2-ranked redshirt freshman Aeoden Sinclair secured the third Mizzou win of the afternoon, lighting up the scoreboard en route to a 20-4 technical fall. Redshirt senior Evan Bates joined in on the party with a victory at 197 pounds to bring the Tigers within 3 points of UNI.
MATCH NOTES
- Mizzou's all-time record against the Panthers falls to 17-23 and 12-8 under Head Coach Brian Smith.
- True freshman Peyton Westpfahl competed in his first dual for Mizzou, having previously only competed at the Tiger Style Invite.
- At 149 pounds, Edmond becomes the second Tiger to beat UNI's Ethan Basile this season, with true freshman Seth Mendoza defeating him by technical fall at the Cougar Clash.
- Sinclair's technical fall at 184 pounds was his fourth of the season, and his 10th total victory by bonus points.
