Tigers stand at 7-4 heading into regular-season finale at Arkansas.
NORMAN, Okla. – A blocked field goal followed by a long pass play in the second quarter changed the complexion of the game and allowed No. 8 Oklahoma to ride its highly ranked defense to a 17-6 victory over No. 22 Mizzou Saturday at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
The Tigers (7-4, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) opened the game with a 14-play drive that led to a 39-yard field goal by Robert Meyer. On the drive, three different Tigers had a carry and three different receivers caught a pass. Mizzou was dominating the game into the second quarter and had a drive that reached the Oklahoma 17-yard line. But OU's Peyton Bowen blocked a 35-yard field goal attempt by Meyer, and three plays later, John Mateer threw a short pass on a crossing route over the middle to Isaiah Sategna III who broke free and sprinted 87 yards to the end zone for a touchdown that put the Sooners ahead, 7-3. Prior to the scoring play, the Sooners (9-2, 5-2) had gained only 20 yards.
"Disappointing result as well as we played at times defensively and as well as we started offensively," Mizzou coach Eliah Drinkwitz said. "There were four third downs in the second quarter defensively that we gave up a big play, and then two in the red area. Then offensively our inability to score touchdowns in the red zone or have any type of conversions in the third quarter. Defense gave us every chance in the world. Just didn't get it done."
The Tigers went three and out and OU took over at the MU 35-yard line after a short punt. On a key third-and-10 at the 23, Mateer ran 15 yards for a first down then hit Javonnie Gibson with an 8-yard play-action pass for a touchdown with 2:22 left in the half to up the lead to 14-3.
Beau Pribula, in his first game back at quarterback since suffering a severe ankle injury four weeks ago, executed the two-minute drill, completing four-of-four passes for 63 yards. But the drive stalled out at the Oklahoma 3-yard line, and Oliver Robbins kicked a 21-yard field goal just 17 seconds before the half that brought Mizzou within 14-6.
The Sooners got a 45-yard field goal from Tate Sandell on their first possession of the second half, and the two defenses slugged it out the rest of the way. Each unit forced three three-and-outs, and OU intercepted a pair of Pribula passes.
But the Tigers mounted a fourth-quarter charge. With 8:29 to play, Pribula completed passes of 23, 37 and five yards to Kevin Coleman Jr. and faced a fourth-and-two at the OU 21. But Pribula's pass to the end zone went off Coleman's fingertips and the Sooners took over on downs. Mizzou moved into Oklahoma territory again in the game's final two minutes before Eli Bowen intercepted a pass at the OU 20-yard line.
Pribula completed 20 of 36 passes for 231 yards. Oklahoma's fourth-ranked rushing defense held the MU running game to 70 yards and logged four quarterback sacks. Mizzou's Ahmad Hardy, the nation's leading rusher, was limited to 57 yards on 17 carries. Coleman had seven receptions for 115 yards.
The Missouri defense, led by linebacker Josiah Trotter's team-leading 13 tackles, held Oklahoma to 276 total yards; 138 in each half. Mateer was just 14 of 30 for 173 yards – 87 of those coming on that one second-quarter play – and he was sacked twice.
