Mizzou soccer dropped its match against No. 15 Mississippi State, 3-0, on Friday evening at Audrey J. Walton Soccer Stadium.
Missouri (4-6-1, 1-3-0 SEC) battled throughout the night and generated quality scoring chances, recording seven shots with two on target from Bella Carrillo (Frisco, Texas) and McKenna Moran (Rowlett, Texas). The Bulldogs (8-1-1, 3-0-1 SEC) capitalized on set pieces to build their advantage.
Mississippi State opened scoring in the fifth minute and doubled its lead at the 32-minute mark, with both goals stemming from corner kick opportunities.
The Tigers responded with a strong second half, nearly cutting into the deficit in the 55th minute when Ava Lamothe (Lanexa, Kan.) broke free and fired a right-footed strike that grazed the right crossbar.
Just minutes later, a corner from Shania Spriggs (Loganville, Ga.) connected with Carrillo, who forced a diving save with her shot to the bottom left corner. Missouri kept pressing, adding two more shots on target from Carrillo and McKenna Moran (O'Fallon, Mo.) to test the Bulldog keeper.
Mississippi State added a goal in the 73rd minute to close the scoring.
Kate Phillips (Fishers, Ind.) recorded four saves on the night, marking her eighth consecutive game with multiple saves. Overall, Missouri finished with seven shots and won the corner kick battle by a 5-3 margin.
