No. 8 Auburn Stops Mizzou, 1-6

AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Missouri (6-14, 1-6 SEC) fell to No. 8 Auburn (16-2, 7-0 SEC) on Sunday afternoon, 1-6. The Tigers were faced with three ITA ranked singles players and one ranked doubles duo.
In doubles play, Bronte Murgett and Gabriela Martinez took on No. 22 Selin Ovunc and Ariana Arseneault. Murgett and Martinez battled back from a deficit and won three games before doubles play was stopped and the match left unfinished.
Emelie Schwarte secured the lone point for Mizzou, excelling in the first and third sets and taking the match against Adeline Flach, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
The singles matches posted Mizzou against three of the top singles players in the country. Murgett competed against No. 65 Ovunc and brought the match to a third set after winning the first and dropping the second. Ovunc took control in the final set, defeating Murgett, 4-6, 5-7, 6-0. Ellie Wright played No. 59 Arseneault and similarly forced a third set after a strong showing in the second set. Wright won four games in the final set, but Arseneault pulled away, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Elys Ventura took on the third ranked player in No. 81 Carolyn Ansari. The match went to three sets after Ventura dominated the second set, but was unsuccessful in the final set.
"Today was the spark that we are looking for heading into the end of the SEC Schedule" said coach Chris Wootton. "We took the number seven team in the country to the brink. We had four third sets that we fought hard to get into. We grew as a team and as a family this weekend. Our moment is coming! I have no doubt that we will shock the SEC and make more history before the year ends."
The Tigers return to Columbia for another pair of home matches against No. 7 Georgia and No. 31 Tennessee on Friday, April 1, and Sunday, April 3.
