Gabriela Martinez scored the first Mizzou point against Georgia since entering the SEC
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri (6-15, 1-7 SEC) was defeated by No. 10 Georgia (12-3, 7-1 SEC) on Friday afternoon, 6-1. Gabriela Martinez' lone point served as the Tigers' first ever point against the Bulldogs since entering the SEC in 2012.
The Tigers were handed a stacked Bulldog roster, competing against two ITA-ranked doubles pairs and four ranked singles players. Bronte Murgett and Gabriela Martinez paced themselves against No. 12 Morgan Coppoc and Ania Hertel, keeping the match at an even four apiece before Georgia obtained the doubles point.
Four out of the six singles matchups posted a Mizzou player against a ranked Georgia rival. Gabriela Martinez was once again the sole Tiger to post a singles win for Mizzou, taking down a ranked No. 71 Kowalski, 6-4, 2-6, 10-1. Martinez earned her fourth consecutive singles win and first ranked victory of the season. This point also doubled as the program's first score against Georgia since becoming a member of the SEC in 2012. No Mizzou team had been able to crack the scoreless drought against Georgia until Martinez did today.
Ellie Wright challenged the Top-25 ranked Reasco, generating a quick start and fighting for each point, but unable to pull off the upset, losing 6-4, 6-2. Bronte Murgett also forced a competitive game from No. 27 Ma, winning a couple of games in each set, but dropping the match, 6-2, 6-3.
"We played a very talented team today that was prepared and executed at a high level. We competed at every spot beginning with the doubles point" said head coach Chris Wootton. "Today is the first time in history that a Mizzou player won a singles point against the Georgia Bulldogs in a SEC dual match. I want to congratulate Gabi Martinez for her accomplishment today! I am looking forward to another great opportunity on Sunday to make more history."
Mizzou will host No. 29 Tennessee on Sunday, April 3, at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The match will begin at 10 a.m. and coffee/donuts will be provided.
