The Tigers host seven schools, including old Big-12 foe Kansas
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Mizzou Track and Field is set to host its first of two outdoor meets of the 2021 season, kicking off with the Mizzou Spring Opener, set for March 19-20, at Audrey J. Walton Stadium. The meet will be the Tiger's first outdoor meet in over 600 days, as COVID-19 postponed the Tigers outdoor campaign last season.
A total of six teams will travel to Columbia, as the Tigers are set to host old Big 12 foe Kansas, Loyola-Chicago, North Dakota, St. Louis, Nebraska-Omaha and Illinois-Chicago. Live results will be available through PTTiming.com.
Mizzou begins the outdoor season after wrapping up the indoor season at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas last weekend. Three Tigers captured first-team All-America honors on the meet, finishing among the top-8 individuals in the country. Redshirt senior Ja'Mari Ward (Cahokia, Ill.) also reset his own school record in the indoor men's long jump.
The Mizzou Spring Opener will begin at 3:30 p.m. CT on Friday, starting with the men's hammer throw and women's javelin. Later in the evening, the Tigers will kick off track events with the men's and women's 1500m run at 7:30 p.m. CT. To close out day one, Mizzou will compete in the men's and women's 5000m.
The Tigers will then open day two with the men's shot put and women's discus at 11:30 a.m. CT. Track events will follow, starting with the men's and women's 4x100m relay at 12:00 p.m. CT. Individual track events will follow, and the Tigers will wrap up the weekend with men's and women's 4x400m relay at 2:25 p.m. CT.
In the women's javelin, sophomore Ava Curry (Liberty, Mo.) will return to action. Curry holds the third-best javelin mark in program history with a throw of 50.74m (166-6), which she set at the 2019 Texas Relays and took first in the event.
Redshirt senior Jordan McClendon (Black Jack, Mo.) and redshirt junior Emily Stauffer (Reinholds, Penn.) will also be in action for the women's team in the field events. McClendon will compete in the women's hammer throw. She currently holds the second best hammer throw mark in school history with a throw of 65.68m (215-6). Stauffer will lead the Mizzou women in the shot put, as she currently holds the fifth best mark in school history in the event. Stauffer last competed at the 2021 SEC Indoor Championships, where she took 14th in the shot put.
In the men's field events, redshirt freshman Mitch Weber (Saint Clair, Minn.) will compete in the hammer throw, discus and shot put. Competing unattached in the discus for Mizzou in 2019, Weber notched a mark of 58.57m (192-2) in the Tom Botts Invitational, which would have ranked fifth all-time at Mizzou. Weber also last competed at the SEC Indoor Championships, where he finished sixth in the shot put.
On the track, redshirt senior Thomas George (Gloucester, U.K.) will lead 10 runners in the 1500m race. Additionally, sophomore Morgan O'Neal (Sylacauga, Ala.) will compete in the 400m hurdles, as well as both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. O'Neal also has made her mark on the Mizzou record books, as she holds the third-best time in program history in the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.98.
Following the Mizzou Spring Opener, Mizzou will send a select group of athletes to the Texas Relays on March 25-27 in Austin, Texas. The Tigers then have a weekend off before returning home for the annual Tom Botts Invitational on April 9-10.
