Mizzou earns first SEC and ranked win since 2017

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis (12-3, 1-0 SEC) won its SEC-opening match over No. 25 Mississippi State, 4-3, on Saturday night at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. Senior Serena Nash (Bradford, England) clinched the match for Mizzou at the No. 6 spot for the Tigers.

The win snaps a 30-match SEC losing streak for the Tigers, who last won a conference match on April 16, 2017 against No. 33 Alabama, 4-3. That win over the Crimson Tide was Mizzou's last win over a ranked opponent, while Saturday's triumphant victory is its highest-ranked win since beating No. 17 Texas A&M, 4-3, on March 3, 2017.

DOUBLES

In doubles action, Mississippi State earned the doubles points after wins on court 2 and 3. Mizzou's No. 1 singles team of junior Bronte Murgett (Holmfirth, Great Britain) and senior Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) was tied, 4-4, against the No. 41-ranked team of Tamara Racine and Magda Adaloglou when the doubles point was clinched.

SINGLES

In singles play, Mizzou earned victories on courts 1, 4, 5 and from Murgett, Oliveira and sophomore Elys Ventura (Auckland, New Zealand) and Nash, respectively. Murgett and Oliveira won in straight sets, as Murgett defeated Racine, 6-3, 7-6, while Oliveira beat Alexandra Mikhailuk, 6-3, 6-4. On court 5, Ventura won the first set, 7-6, dropped the second set, 6-3, then came back to win the third set, 6-3, to take the match over Lilian Poling.

The match came down to court 6, where Nash won a three-set thriller over Chloe Cirotte, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

UP NEXT

Mizzou will next host Ole Miss on Monday, Feb. 22, a match which was originally scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 18 that was rescheduled due to weather. The match is scheduled to start at Noon CT at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
