Mizzou Basketball Game Notes
STORYLINES
- Mizzou ripped the nets on Tuesday night vs. South Carolina with a season-high 58.3 percent clip from the field as a team on 16 assists. It marked Mizzou's highest field goal percentage since shooting better than 60 percent vs. Florida, January 11, 2020. Five different Tigers scored at least eight points, led by three in double figures.
- The Tigers are coming off back-to-back victories in SEC play for the first time this season after dominating Texas A&M on the road, 68-52, last Saturday. It marked the Tigers' third true road win of the season - all by double-digits. The last time Mizzou had three true road victories by a double-digit margin in an entire season was 2006-07.
- Mizzou has now won four games away from home, including a neutral site victory over ranked Oregon. Saturday's win at Texas A&M marked the Tigers' third true road win by Jan. 16 for the first time since the 1994-95 squad won three true road games by Jan. 7. Before Cuonzo Martin's arrival, Mizzou hadn't won a true road game since 2014. The Tigers have 12 such wins in the Martin era & at least three in a season for the second time under his guidance.
- Tennessee leads the all-time head-to-head series with Mizzou, 10-7, and the Volunteers have won four straight since a Nov. 17, 2018 Tiger win. A win Saturday would give Mizzou its first win in Knoxville since Dec. 16, 1972 and its third all-time victory on Rocky Top.
- On Saturday, Mizzou seeks its second win over a Top-6 team this season and its third win over an AP Top 25 opponent (No. 6 Illinois, No. 21 Oregon). A victory over No. 6 Tennessee would be Mizzou's first road win over a Top 6 team since beating No. 3 Baylor in Waco on Jan. 21, 2012. The last Mizzou team to have two wins over AP Top 6 teams in the same season was the 2011-12 squad, which beat Baylor twice.
- Mizzou is one of seven teams nationally with four Quad 1 NET wins thus far. The Tigers check in at No. 22 in the latest NET rankings. Ten of Mizzou's 11 opponents are in the NET's Top 135. Thanks to the tough schedule and Mizzou taking advantage of those opportunities, ESPN's Basketball Power Index ranks Mizzou's strength of record ninth nationally and the Tigers clock in at No. 4 nationally in the RPI.
- Only six teams nationally have at least two ranked wins and three true road wins: Baylor, Iowa, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Marquette and Mizzou. Only 20 total teams have multiple wins over ranked teams.
- Mizzou checked in at No. 19 in the Jan. 18 AP Top 25 poll. That marks six consecutive weeks for the Tigers in the poll, their longest streak since 2013-14. All six weeks have included Mizzou in the Top 20.
- Mizzou's defense continues to be stifling. The Tigers held Texas A&M to 52 points, its lowest output of the season. Five of Mizzou's 11 opponents have scored their season-low against the Tigers. South Carolina was Mizzou's 18th consecutive opponent to score fewer than 80 points.
- Mizzou forward Jeremiah Tilmon, Jr., has been dominant of late, riding perhaps the best stretch of his career to open SEC play. He's shooting 75 percent from the floor while averaging 18.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game during the last four games. Tilmon has four double-doubles in the last six games.
TILMON, JR., STILL DOMINATING
- Jeremiah Tilmon entered his senior campaign with six career double-doubles. He has four in the past six games after a 14-point, 10-rebound, three-block performance at Texas A&M and a 19-point, 10-rebound, three-block outing vs. South Carolina.
- He is the first Tiger with three blocks in back-to-back games since Jontay Porter in 2018. Tilmon is three blocks shy of sole possession of ninth all-time in program history. He is 13 swats shy of becoming the eighth Tiger ever with 100 career blocks.
- Tilmon went 8-for-11 vs. South Carolina. He added a career-best three steals during the dominant outing, becoming just the fourth Tiger with 18 points, three steals and three blocks in a game (Steve Stipanovich, Doug Smith twice & Ricky Frazier).
- In the past four games, Tilmon is averaging 18.5 points and 9.3 rebounds, while shooting 75 percent from the field.
- He's been on a torrid stretch to begin league play, shooting an SEC-high 73.3 percent from the field (33-of-45) while averaging 16.6 points per game (eight in the SEC) and 8.2 boards per outing (third in the SEC). The current all-time SEC record for field goal percentage in league games only is 71.2 percent, set by Alabama's Bobby Lee Hurt in 1984.
- Tilmon's four double-doubles already matches his career-high for a season. A fifth would be the most by a Tiger in a season since Jordan Barnett in 2017-18. He's one of just 72 players nationally with four double-doubles in 2020-21.
- Tilmon had arguably the best performance of his career at Arkansas, scoring a career-high 25 points - the most by any Tiger in a game this season. He added 11 rebounds, securing his eighth career double-double. Tilmon limited the opposing center to 0-for-11 shooting in a total all-around dominating effort. He followed with 16 points, on 8-of-10 shooting, at Mississippi State and snagged six rebounds. He is just the second Tiger since 2010 to post a 25-point, 11-rebound game, joining Jordan Geist.
- Tilmon's team-best 7.8 rebounds per game clip ranks fourth in the SEC and is the highest by a Tiger since Alex Oriakhi in 2012-13. In his 17 career games with at least eight rebounds, Mizzou is 17-2.
- Tilmon secured his seventh career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds vs. Bradley. He made the game-winning 3-point play with 1.0 second left, converting a tough bucket and draining a free throw to push the Tigers to a 1-point win. It was the first game-winning bucket of his career, including high school and childhood.
- Through 11 games, Tilmon leads Mizzou in rebounding (7.8) and field goal percentage (.662). That ranks ninth nationally this season. He is one of the nation's most efficient scorers, shooting 57.3 percent for his career, which ranks fourth all-time at Mizzou and 29th nationally among all active players. He shot 58.9 percent a season ago from the floor.
- He's on pace to become the first Mizzou player in more than 30 years to shoot at least 54 percent in all four seasons.
- He launched the 2020-21 campaign with a career-high 12 boards and eight points on 4-of-5 shooting vs. Oral Roberts. Tilmon then dominated the paint vs. No. 21 Oregon, scoring 11 points and snagging nine boards. He tallied eight points and nine boards vs. Liberty. He's chipped in at least seven points in 12 of the last 14 games.
- When Jeremiah scores at least 13 points, Mizzou is 18-5 in his career. When he reaches 16 points, Mizzou is 10-0.
