A QUICK RECAP
Mizzou made quick work of its competition in the opening round, winning nine of 10 bouts with six of those nine coming via bonus point wins (four technical falls, one major decision and one pin). Mizzou advanced into the quarterfinals at every weight but 197 pounds.
In the quarters, Cameron Valdiviez kick-started another impressive run as he advanced to the semifinals at 125 pounds. But his semifinal berth did not come easy as he fell behind NIU's Bryce West, 8-1, after the first period. He rallied to cut the lead to 8-3 after two, and then 8-5 midway through the third. Then, he caught West on his back and had four nearfall points in the bank before he pinned West with less than a minute remaining to complete the comeback.
Mizzou then sent its next five wrestlers into the semis, with every class from 125 through 165 represented. Senior Dylan Wisman pinned his way into the semis at 184 pounds with a pair of falls over Hunter Yeargen (Ohio) and Peter Acciardi (Buffalo). At the end of the day's first session, all 10 Mizzou wrestlers were still alive in the brackets, with seven in the semifinals and three in the consolations. The Tigers had 72.5 team points following the first session, well ahead of second-place Central Michigan, which had 53.0.
After a brief intermission, the semifinal matches started and Mizzou was favored in just two of the first five semifinal bouts, according to seed. After Valdiviez lost to top-seeded Drew Hildebrandt to open action, Allan Hart downed the top seed at 133 pounds in Buffalo's Derek Spann, doing so with a 5-3 decision in the first sudden victory period. That advanced Hart to the finals and guaranteed him a spot as the NCAA Championships, earning one of the league's five spots at 133.
Grant Leeth then lost a wild bout at the 141-pound semifinal to top-seeded Dresden Simon of Central Michigan. The next two Tigers then advanced to the finals as 149-pounder Brock Mauller claimed a 6-4 win over SIU-E's Tyshawn Williams and 157-pounder Jarrett Jacques pinned Ohio's Zac Carson to advance to the final at that weight, avenging a 3-2 loss to Carson earlier this season. Both earned bids to the NCAA Championships with their semifinal wins.
Mizzou was then dealt a tough blow at 165 pounds as Peyton Mocco appeared to advance to the finals with a 6-4 win over NIU's Izzak Olejnik, registering an escape with 19 seconds to tie the bout at 4-4, and a takedown to gain a 6-4 lead with just nine seconds remaining. Unfortunately, the sequence went to review and the referees deemed that Mocco never escaped, so the bout was reset to 19 seconds remaining with Mocco on bottom and trailing, 4-3. Olejnik held on after the momentum swing, sending Mocco to the consolation bracket.
At 184 pounds, Wisman took a 9-0 lead over Rider's George Walton, with many of those coming from stall calls. Walton then was disqualified as Wisman advanced to the finals, earning one of the league's three allocations for the NCAA Championships at 184.
Connor Flynn (174) advanced in his evening consolation bout and will wrestle top-seeded Jacob Oliver (Edinboro) tomorrow to keep his hopes of advancing to the NCAA Championships alive. Valdiviez, Leeth, Mocco and Bohlken are all still alive in the consolations as well. Valdiviez needs to finish at least third to earn a berth to the NCAA Championships and Leeth needs to finish at least fifth. Mocco can still qualify for NCAAs if he finishes third with a criteria match Sunday if things break his way. Bohlken needs to finish at least fourth.
"Really pleased with the four guys who punched their tickets to the finals; they wrestled great," head coach Brian Smith said. "I think of Allan Hart, where he's come from at the beginning of the year to now, he's on fire. Dylan Wisman just looks amazing out there. I saw that about a month ago with those two and they just keep the momentum going. Brock and Jarrett are consistent all the time. That was a big win for Jarrett. We did a good job of not only getting wins, but getting bonus points today. Please with those guys."
Mizzou will look to capture its ninth straight conference tournament title and eighth straight MAC crown tomorrow. The championships bouts begin at 1:30 p.m. (CT) while the consolation bouts kick off at noon (CT).
