ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Mizzou Softball fell to rival Illinois, 2-1 Wednesday evening at the Lou Brock Sports Complex, on the campus of Lindenwood University.
The Tigers (19-7, 3-0 SEC) stranded the tying run at third in the top of the seventh.
TURNING POINT
Illinois took advantage of Mizzou errors, as both of the Illini runs were scored due to errors. Tied 1-1, Illinois (11-11, 0-0 Big Ten) used small ball to put a runner on second with one out. A ground ball to Kimberly Wert for an infield single put runners on the corners, but the throw to first was bobbled to give Miranda Gallardo enough time to reach home.
TOP TIGERS
- Cayla Kessinger went 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and a double. Her double batted in the lone run for the Tigers.
- Brooke Wilmes was 3-for-4 on the day, scoring Mizzou's lone run.
NOTES
- Cayla Kessinger extended her hitting streak to 15 games – the longest of her career and tied for the fourth longest in program history.
- Brooke Wilmes has reached base safely in 20-straight games. The junior is also riding an eight-game hitting streak.
- The previous three meetings between the two schools have been decided by a total of four runs. The Tigers were 2-1 in that stretch.
