Cross scores first career goal in comeback bid
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Mizzou Soccer fell to Tennessee, 2-1, on Friday night at Regal Soccer Stadium. The loss drops the Tigers to 1-2 on the season, 0-2 on the road.
Mizzou put up a valiant effort with 20 shots on the night – nine on goal – but were only able to get one shot into the back of the net. Zoe Cross scored the first goal of her career in the 79th minute to pull the Tigers within one, but the equalizer could not be found in the final minute.
TURNING POINT
Trailing 2-0 in the final 15 minutes, the Tigers launched an all-out attack to try and make their way back into the match. Cross scored her goal in the 79th minute to pull Mizzou within a one as the team came out with a strong counter.
Cross' goal came on a high-arching ball from 25 yards out on the right side, and Tennessee goalkeeper, Lindsey Romig, could not field the shot cleanly to concede the goal.
In the final 10 minutes of the match Mizzou was able to land two shots on goal, but Romig's eight saves did enough to keep the Tigers out of the back of the net a second time.
Mizzou had a chance to equalize in the 56th minute on a penalty kick attempt from Grace Kitts. The redshirt senior was able to place her shot outside the hands of Romig, but the ball hit the post to ricochet to the outside of the pitch.
QUOTABLE
"In the SEC it's very tough on the road, and you typically need everything to go your way to grab a win," Mizzou head coach Bryan Blitz said. "I'm so proud of the way our team battled and fought to stay in it and put up a late fight. We had a couple of costly mistakes, but you need to credit (Romig) for the way she played tonight."
