Alessi scores equalizer in 47th minute as Mizzou picks up a point
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Soccer (1-2-1) recorded a 1-1 Senior Night draw over LSU (0-3-1) in a hard-hitting match that featured plenty of end-to-end action, Friday evening at Walton Stadium. Mizzou's lone goal-scorer, Bella Alessi, knocked in her first goal of the season for the Tigers in the 47th minute to equalize the match.
LSU was able to break away and score on a counterattack in the 38th minute against the run of play near the end of the half. LSU's Taylor Dobles dribbled up to Alessio who dove for the save, but she saw the ball deflect off her leg and into the net for a 1-0 LSU lead.
The second half began with Mizzou on the prowl, creating more chances than the visiting Tigers and pressuring LSU consistently. Roughly two minutes into the half, Mizzou was able to convert in the 47th minute as Alessi scored her first goal of the season on a counterattack thanks to a crafty assist from Madilyn Hamline.
Tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, that match went to the first of two overtime periods. The first overtime period was more defensive oriented as LSU failed to register any shots and Mizzou ripped off three. After lurking near the LSU goal and applying constant pressure during the end of the first period of overtime, Mizzou kept up the intensity throughout the second period of overtime resulting in three corner kicks. That pressure was not enough to claim the game-winner as the match ended in a draw after 110 minutes.
TURNING POINT
In a quick rush of action, Madilyn Hamline passed the ball up the pitch from near midfield. Alessi swooped in to claim possession. Dashing down the pitch, Alessi smashed a shot at Swift who was able to stop the ball's initial momentum. However, the LSU keeper fumbled the ball and Alessi was relentless in pursuit of the ball. Tapping the ball out from under Swift, Alessi was able to equalize the match.
To send the match to overtime, sophomore goalkeeper Isabella Alessio recorded a match-saving save in the final three minutes. Lauren Robles of the opposition fired a shot from the left side of the box, but Alessio was able to parry the shot away from the goal to maintain a tied score.
While the momentum heavily favored the home squad for the remainder of the match, Mizzou was unable to find the game-winner after 110 minutes.
