Ventura’s Upset Highlights Day 1 at ITA Central Regional for Mizzou Tennis

Mizzou advances three to round of 16 in singles competition, two in doubles play
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mizzou Tennis opened the first day of competition at the ITA Central Regional with seven victories in singles play and two in doubles play. When play begins on Saturday, Mizzou will have three athletes alive in competition in the singles bracket and two teams in doubles play.
Sophomore Elys Ventura (Aukland, New Zealand) provided the highlight of the day for the Tigers, as she defeated the No. 2-ranked singles player in the tournament, Lisa Marie Rioux (Oklahoma State), 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16. When the 2020 season ended in March, Rioux was the No. 49-ranked singles play in the nation by ITA.
SINGLES
Joining Ventura in the round of 16 on Saturday after a pair of victories of their own on the first day of competition was senior Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) and junior Bronte Murgett (Holmfirth, Great Britain). Wright defeated Mary Streller (Oklahoma State), 6-1, 6-1, and Chunxi Xin (Central Arkansas), 6-4, 6-3. Murgett defeated Saki Oyama (North Texas), 6-4, 6-1, and Morgan Cross (Arkansas), 7-5, 6-1.
In the opening round of play, Ventura defeated Fuka Nonoyama (Central Arkansas), 6-3, 6-3.
DOUBLES
In doubles play, Wright and Murgett picked up a 6-1 win over Lucie Devier and Matilde Magrini (North Texas), while freshman Rom Cardenas Rifka (Merida, Yucatan, Mexico) and freshman Valentina Vazquez Pongruber (Santiago, Chile) beat Jaeun Lee and Paulina Engback (Central Arkansas), 6-4. Both teams will be back in action tomorrow in the round of 16.
