The Icelandic standout gives Mizzou new three newcomers next season
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Men's Golf added Iceland native Viktor Einarsson to its 2019 recruiting class, head coach Mark Leroux announced Tuesday. Einarsson inked his National Letter of Intent to play for the Tigers, and joins Columbia standout Ross Steelman and Taiwanese talent Yu-Ta Tsai in Mizzou's crop of newcomers next fall.
"I couldn't more excited about the 2019 recruiting class," Leroux said. "This trio will come in and make an immediate impact on our program."
"I've been playing golf since I was seven years old and my dream is to play professionally," Einarsson said. "I believe playing at Mizzou will help me reach my goals and I'll get the opportunity to receive a great education simultaneously."
Einarsson was selected to be a member of the Icelandic national team at the age of 13 and has represented his country in several tournaments since then. The native of Reykjavik, Iceland, helped Iceland finish fourth at the 2017 European Boys Team Championship in Poland and place third at the 2018 European Boys Team Championship in Hungary.
Einarsson captured the Icelandic match play championship in 2016, besting a field of 32 competitors. He then went on to win the Order of Merit on the 2018 Icelandic Boys tour after finishing as the runner up in 2017. On his journey to the Order of Merit, he racked up five consecutive Top-5 finishes, highlighted by a pair of second-place performances.
Einarsson's fellow 2019 signees, Steelman and Tsai, are both ranked in the Top-75 of the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings, giving Mizzou one of its best recruiting classes in program history.
Mizzou's 2018-19 campaign as a team came to a close at the SEC Championships last week, but sophomore Jamie Stewart earned a postseason berth, as he was selected to compete as an individual in the upcoming NCAA Regionals. Stewart heads to Louisville from May 13-15 to vie for a spot at the NCAA National Championships.
