COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Softball (30-21) took care of business in its final non-conference midweek game of the season, short-gaming UMKC (25-25), 8-0, in six innings. The Tigers were adept in all three phases, getting early offense in the form of a three-run first inning, while getting great pitching and defense the rest of the way to shut the 'Roos out.
Redshirt senior P Madi Norman was excellent for Coach Anderson, going five innings and only giving up two hits. Norman had six strikeouts for the fourth time this season. Sophomore P Cassie Gasper closed things out in the top of the sixth, going one inning while not allowing a hit.
TOP TIGERS
- Mizzou got on the board in the first inning thanks to a two RBI bunt from senior LF Regan Nash that took her all the way around the base path, thanks to errors from the UMKC first baseman and right fielder.
- Freshman SS Jazmyn Rollin had an RBI double in the fourth inning to put the Tigers up 5-0. Rollin now has seven doubles on the season, good for fourth-most on the team.
- Rollin followed up in the sixth with a walk-off single to end the game by run rule.
- Sophomore C Hatti Moore blasted a three-run home run in the fourth, putting the game out of reach.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou got off to another good early start, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead after Nash went all the way around after laying down a bunt, plating herself and sophomore CF Brooke Wilmes after UMKC made a throwing error and a fielding error.
The Tigers put the game away in the fourth, which was topped off by a three-run blast from Moore. Moore's seventh homer of the season would make it 7-0, and Rollin's base hit would close things out in the bottom of the sixth.
QUOTEABLES
"We needed to come out here and compete, because midweek games can be tricky," Coach Anderson said. "I thought we forgot about Mississippi State and came out here with confidence. That's all you can do. We will be ready for this weekend."
