COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Softball (20-16, 6-6) dropped both games on day two of the Mizzou Tournament on Saturday at Mizzou Softball Stadium, falling to Pitt, 5-4, and to Oregon, 4-1.
Junior P Eli Daniel got the start in game one against the Panthers, dropping to 2-3 on the season following the loss. Daniel had her moments of effectiveness, as she struck out six batters, but she also gave up two two-run shots on the day, which proved too much for the Tiger offense to overcome.
Senior P Madi Norman moves to 9-7 this season, losing game two vs. Oregon on the heels of her 6.0 innings pitched. Norman had five Ks against the Ducks, the eighth time this season with at least five. Â
TOP TIGERS - GAME ONE
- Senior 1B Kolby Romaine was again productive in game one, as she hit a double and a single. Romaine now has eight multi-hit games this season, second-most on the team
- Junior P Eli Daniel recorded six strikeouts in today's game. This was her third time this season with 6+ Ks.
- Sophomore 1B Kara Decker hit a double in the fifth inning, which contributed to a late offensive push from the Tigers. Decker now has 5 doubles on the season and is batting .333.
TURNING POINT - GAME ONE
The Tigers were up 2-0 going into the third inning, and it looked as if they were headed for another victory. However, Pittsburgh utilized the long ball, and took over the game in the middle innings.
The Tiger offense went cold following its hot start, as the Black & Gold left 11 on base. Pittsburgh would add two-run bombs in both the third and the fifth innings, and a run in the seventh, which would prove to be too much for the Tigers to overcome. The TIgers would mount a seventh-inning rally, scoring one in the bottom of the final inning, but would strand two to cement the loss.
TOP TIGERS - GAME TWO
- Sophomore 1B Kara Decker hit her first home run of the season, a bomb to left field in the top of the fifth inning.
- Senior P Madi Norman recorded five strikeouts, her eighth time with five or more in a game this season.
TURNING POINT - GAME TWO
Oregon's sticks were hot early as the Ducks scored three runs in the top of the second inning. Rachel Cid hit a two-run homer, followed by Allee Bunker also scoring a run. Mizzou would get one back in the fifth, on Decker's first homer of the season, but the comeback would stop there.
QUOTEABLES
"Told them yesterday, the game doesn't care," Coach Anderson said. "And today, it showed. We left 11 on base in game one, and we came out flat in game two because of game one. You have to learn to be disciplined enough to know that games don't run one into the other. You can't let that kind of stuff get to you, and today, we did."
