Norman Registers First Collegiate No-Hitter in the Win

COLUMBIA, Mo. – After dropping a pair of hard-fought games in day two of the Mizzou Tournament, Mizzou Softball (21-16, 6-6) stormed back to take down the Oregon Ducks (16-19, 1-8) in a dominant 8-0 run-rule victory on Sunday afternoon. In addition to the Tigers' overpowering offense, senior P Madi Norman pitched a gem, recording the 41st no-hitter in Mizzou Softball history and the first Tiger no-hitter from a single pitcher since 2017.

Seven different Tigers scored runs, with five of those seven also recording at least one RBI. Mizzou's streaking offense scored 22 total runs this weekend as the Tigers finished an even .500 in their host tournament.

TOP TIGERS

  • Sophomore INF Kimberly Wert's first career grand slam in the fourth inning allowed the Tigers to take a commanding 4-0 lead over the Ducks and opened the offensive floodgates for the Black & Gold bats.
  • Wert's team-best 15th home run of the year raised her RBI total to a remarkable 41 on the season with 15 games still left to play in the regular season. She is now just five homers away from tying the program record.
  • In one of the finest outings of her career, Norman turned in her first career no-hitter, retiring 18 batters over the course of five innings. Norman earned her 10th win of the year, also a career-high, as her season ERA improved to an impressive 2.90.
  • Senior OF Regan Nash was hot at the plate, going 2-3 on the day and scoring a run. The Camden Point, Mo., native also snagged a stolen base in the first inning, giving her a total of 10 bags this season, tied for the team lead.

TURNING POINT

Both teams were scoreless through the first two-and-a-half innings, but that all changed when Wert stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded in the third frame. The sophomore crushed a grand slam to center field to break the tie, giving her team a commanding 4-0 lead.

Wert's bomb got Mizzou's bats rolling, as the Tigers went on to score a run in the fourth inning, when sophomore Brooke Wilmes notched a RBI double. Never looking back, Mizzou tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning to end it, with a Hatti Moore solo shot, an RBI single from sophomore DP Kara Decker, and a walk-off single from freshman PH Emma Raabe.

QUOTEABLES

"It was an emotional day," Coach Anderson said. "But I thought we were able to flip the switch despite that. Madi was unbelievable today, but you don't get the no-no without great defense. I thought the girls played really well behind her. When you do that and get some production at the plate, you become hard to beat. Great team win today."

UP NEXT

The Tigers travel to Saint Charles, Mo. for a neutral site matchup against border rival Illinois for a double header with the Fighting Illini on Tuesday. The games will begin at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively.
