Seven-Run Fourth Inning from the Bulldogs Proves too Much To Overcome

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mizzou Softball (29-19, 10-9) saw its six-game winning streak snapped in Nusz Park on Friday night, as Mississippi State (28-19, 5-14) and its explosive offense handed the Tigers an 8-3 loss. Mizzou hadn't lost a conference game since April 12, when the Tigers fell to Ole Miss.

Redshirt senior P Madi Norman suffered her eighth loss of the season (14-8), giving up five runs on seven hits over her 4.0 innings pitched. Junior P Eli Daniel came in before Norman reentered in the sixth inning, and she also had a tough time getting going against the Bulldog attack, surrendering three runs on four hits in two innings of work.

TOP TIGERS – GAME ONE

  • Sophomore CF Brooke Wilmes continues to be the fulcrum of the Tiger offense, having another productive night in game one. She finished 1-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
  • Sophomore C Hatti Moore was solid again at the plate, finishing 1-3 with a RBI and a walk.
  • Senior LF Regan Nash and sophomore RF Callie Martin both notched hits, as Nash went 1-2 at the dish while Martin went 1-3.

TURNING POINT – GAME ONE

Mizzou was rolling early, and they owned a 3-0 lead through the top of the fourth. Then, the Bulldogs offense went off.

The Bulldogs would put up a seven-spot in the bottom of the inning, including two-straight bases loaded HBPs that would bring two home. Norman was pulled for Daniel after MSU made it a 3-2 ballgame, but Daniel couldn't find her way out of the jam, and the lead ballooned out to 7-3. When all was said and done, Mizzou would get shutout from that point forward, unable to put pressure on the Bulldogs following the offensive barrage. MSU would tack on another run in the fifth for good measure.

QUOTEABLES

"We came in complacent tonight," Coach Anderson said. "In this league, you can't overlook a team because of their record. I thought we did that, and a good team made us pay for it."

UP NEXT

Mizzou will look to knot things up in game two, which will be played at Nusz Park tomorrow at 3 p.m. CT. Game two will be broadcast nationally on SEC Network.
