@MizzouSoftball defeats Texas A&M, 4-3

Romaine’s Sixth-Inning Homer was the Difference in a Tight Contest

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Softball (25-18, 8-8) prevailed against Texas A&M (25-9, 3-13), 4-3, at Mizzou Softball Stadium on Thursday evening, as senior 1B Kolby Romaine hit the go-ahead home run that helped the Tigers take the lead in the bottom of the sixth.

The Tiger pitching staff also came out strong against the Aggies. Senior P Madi Norman earned her 12th win this season, as she allowed just three runs and recorded six strikeouts, marking the third time this season Norman struck out six or more batters. Junior P Eli Daniel came into the game for the final inning, as she retired all three Aggies en route to her sixth save of the season, now good for the third most nationally.

TOP TIGERS

  • Bailey singled to right field to get the Tigers started on offense, recording a two-run RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. This is her third multi-RBI game of the season.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, freshman SS Jazmyn Rollin singled to center field, resulting in an RBI as Nash scored all the way from first base. This marks her 27th RBI of the season.
  • Romaine hit the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Tigers a 4-3 lead. She now has recorded five home runs and 25 RBI on the season.
  • Sophomore CF Brooke Wilmes hit two singles during the game, marking her ninth multi-hit games this season.
  • With the win, Norman moves to 3-0 on the season when she strikes out six or more batters in a game.

TURNING POINT

The game was back and forth for much of the night. Texas A&M opened the scoring for both teams, as Payton McBride smashed a solo homerun in the top of the fourth. However, Mizzou responded, as Bailey hit a two-run RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to give Mizzou the lead. Rollin added some insurance with an RBI single of her own in the fifth as senior LF Regan Nash scored.

Texas A&M did not back down, though, as Baylee Klingler drilled a two-run home run to left field, tying the game at three in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Romaine smashed a go-ahead home run to give the Tigers the lead for good. Daniel entered the game in the top of the seventh to seal the victory for the Tigers and close out the game, as she recorded her sixth save of the season.

QUOTEABLES

"We understand that games can be won and lost in the first inning," Romaine said. "But it just shows how far this team has come. There was no shift on our side when they tied it up. We just knew we needed to get a few more hits, a few more runs. There was no panic, and that's all you can ask for out of a young team like this."
