COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Softball (17-14, 6-6) lost in the series finale to No. 5 Tennessee (28-6, 6-3), 9-3, at Mizzou Softball Stadium on Monday evening after splitting a doubleheader on Sunday. Yesterday's win over the Lady Volunteers marked Head Coach Larissa Anderson's first victory against a top-5 opponent as head coach, although the team was unable to capture the series victory. The Mizzou offense was led by freshman SS Jazmyn Rollin, sophomore RF Brooke Wilmes and sophomore C Hatti Moore, who each recorded one RBI. Senior P Madi Norman put in six innings of work for the Tigers in the circle, as she recorded four strikeouts and allowed six earned runs. With the loss, Norman drops to 8-6 on the season.
Rollin went 3-4 from the plate, as she tallied two singles and one double as she improved her season batting average to .438, still the best on the team. It was just her second-career three-hit performance, as Rollin also notched three against IUPUI (3/1/2019) at the Cardinal Classic.
TOP TIGERS
- Rollin was sensational at the plate, smashing a double and hitting two singles in the game as she tallied one RBI. In the top of the first, Rollin also nabbed her team-leading eighth stolen base of the season.
- Wilmes launched a solo home run to center field in the first inning, putting the Tigers on the scoreboard first with her third home run of the season. With three home runs and two triples, Wilmes is the first Tiger to record multiple triples and home runs in a season since Emily Crane and Sami Fagan did so in 2015.
TURNING POINT
After Mizzou led 1-0 courtesy of a solo home run in the first inning from Wilmes, the Tennessee offense put up a five-spot in the top of the third. Two singles and a three-run double put the Volunteers up 5-1 after they had been held scoreless in the previous two innings in which Norman had retired six straight batters.
In the bottom of the third, Mizzou scored two runs as Rollin hit a double to center field and Moore recorded a sac-fly RBI, but the four-run deficit was too much for the Tigers to overcome. Tennessee added on four insurance runs through the rest of the game as they defeated Mizzou 9-3.
QUOTEABLES
"We have a young team, and that was exposed a little bit today," Coach Anderson said. "They want to play hero ball sometimes, chasing pitches outside of the zone they shouldn't be. That said, though, that felt like a super regional game to me. Two great teams and coaching staffs bringing that level of intensity? That's what it's all about."
