COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Softball (19-14, 6-6) took both games at Wichita State (21-16, 2-4) in Wednesday's doubleheader at Wilkins Stadium. The Tigers cruised to a 7-1 victory in game one, while some late-game homers were necessary to grab a 7-3 win in game two.
Game one was a pitching exhibition, as redshirt senior P Madi Norman went 5.2 innings while striking out five batters. Norman only allowed one run. Junior P Eli Daniel was solid once again in relief, going 1.1 innings with one strikeout to close out the game.
Game two was a fireworks show, and perhaps the best the bats have been all year. The Tigers hit four homers as a team, tied for the most in a game this season. Moreover, all seven runs the Tigers scored in game two came off of home runs, and they all came after the fifth inning.
TOP TIGERS
- Freshman SS Jazmyn Rollin was great for the Tigers in game one, going 2-4 with four RBI, the second time in her career driving in that many runs. It was just the fifth four-RBI performance this season from a Mizzou hitter.
- Sophomore RF Brooke Wilmes scored and registered a hit, as did redshirt freshman 2B Kendyll Bailey.
- Norman recorded five strikeouts for the seventh time this season. She last had five in her first start against Tennessee (3/31/19).
TURNING POINT
Despite loading the bases twice, the Tigers and Shockers were tied after three innings. The Tigers were able to break the game open in the fifth and sixth innings, as Rollin would drive in two runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.
Rollin would double to deep left for her first hit of the day, driving in two runs. Sophomore DP Kara Decker would hit a roller to short that looked to be the end of the inning. However, the shortstop made a throwing error, scoring two more. Rollin would close the door in the sixth, hitting a blooper to shallow right that would score the sixth and seventh runs for Mizzou.
TOP TIGERS
- Rollin was downright special for the Tigers in game two. She went 2-3 at the plate, scoring three runs, a season-high on the team and a career-high for her, while also blasting her seventh home run of the season.
- Sophomore 3B Kimberly Wert keyed the Tiger comeback while also sealing the win. She hit a three-run home run to make it a 4-2 game after the Tigers trailed 2-1, and then sealed the deal with a two-run blast in the top of the seventh.
- Wert is one of just two Tigers this season with multiple homers in a single game. She finished the game 2-4 with five RBI, the most by a Tiger this season.
- Sophomore C Hatti Moore also had a solo shot, following up Wert's homer almost immediately. It was Moore's fourth homer of the year.
TURNING POINT
Mizzou's bats were cold deep into the game, as the Tigers didn't generate any runs through the first five innings of play. Wichita State held a 2-0 lead before Mizzou's offense got loose.
Following a lead-off single from Wilmes and an intentional walk of Rollin, Wert stepped up and crushed a three-run shot to center field. With a newly minted 4-2 lead, Moore put the Tigers up 5-2 with a homer of her own, a solo shot that stayed fair down the left field line by maybe an inch. The Shockers would get a run back in the bottom of the sixth, on a solo shot, but Wert would close the door in the seventh, bombing a two-run homer after Rollin doubled to make it 7-3.
QUOTEABLES
"You can't lose focus and overlook teams like Wichita State," Coach Anderson said. "I thought we got really good pitching in both games, and I thought for the most part, our defense followed suit. I think we got a little too comfortable ahead of game two, but we kept our composure and showed grit in how we fought back. Two solid team wins today."
