COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Men's Basketball trounced Georgia, 64-39, on Wednesday night in Athens with stifling defense and dominance on the glass. The Tigers held the Bulldogs to their fewest points in a home game since scoring 36 vs. Georgia Tech on Dec. 28, 1945. Mizzou owned a +22 rebounding margin, outpacing Georgia 50-28 on the glass.
The 25-point victory was Mizzou's largest in league play this season and largest over an SEC opponent since beating Arkansas, 93-63, on March 5, 2013. Mizzou held Georgia to 25.5-percent shooting from the floor.
Senior Jordan Geist led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, reaching double figures for the 22nd time in the past 26 games. Freshman Torrence Watson drained a career-high five triples and finished with 17 points off the bench. Watson scored 15 of those 17 in the second half. In his first career start, Mitchell Smith grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in 17 minutes.
TURNING POINT
With both teams struggling to find an offensive flow, Geist broke the stalemate in style, scoring six consecutive points to push Mizzou in front, 8-5. The Tigers capitalized on the flurry of buckets from their senior leader and never trailed again, closing the half on a 17-9 run to go up 25-14.
TOP TIGERS
- Geist led Mizzou in scoring for the 10th time this season with his 18 points and added six assists. He's now scored in double figures 22 times during his senior campaign and has scored 15+ points on 13 occasions.
- Watson chipped in 17 points off the bench. He's reached double figures in three consecutive games for the first time in his career. Over those three contests, he's averaging 16.3 points per game.
- Smith snagged a career-high 11 rebounds.
- Jeremiah Tilmon contributed eight points and eight rebounds in 28 solid minutes.
GAME NOTES
- Mizzou held Georgia to its fewest points (39) at home since Dec. 28, 1945 vs. Georgia Tech (36).
- It marked the fewest points Mizzou has allowed in a game since Dec. 29, 2015 against Arkansas Pine Bluff, a 78-25 win.
- The 39 points allowed were the fewest scored by a Mizzou opponent in SEC play since Mississippi State managed just 36 points in 2013.
- Mizzou's 50 boards were a season-high and the Tigers' most ever in an SEC game. The last time Mizzou grabbed 50 rebounds in league play was 55 boards against Iowa State on Jan. 11, 2011.
- The Tigers' +22 rebound margin was their highest in a league game since March 5, 2013.
- Georgia's field goal percentage – 25.5 percent – was the lowest by a Mizzou opponent since March 14, 2013 - Texas A&M (24.1 percent).
